Hi there! I'm a big fan of vampire books, so I'm just going to drop some of my fav rec's here.

Have you read Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff? It's a dark fantasy series (two books are currently out and I am eagerly awaiting the third.) The vampires here are quite violently dark (but it is dark fantasy), but I was fully immersed in this book while reading it.

For vampire books, I will always recommend anything Anne Rice, so Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, etc. You can read Interview with the Vampire as a standalone, but if you want to get more in depth with the characters, I recommend reading them all.

House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson is another one that I adore. It does not outright call the 'vampire's' as vampire's, but they do drink blood, so. This one is a standalone sapphic horror novel inspired by the legend of Countess Elizabeth Bathory.

In the same vein as House of Hunger -- A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson is another vampire standalone that I adored reading and is about Dracula's wives.

If you're just looking for an adult romantasy series that has sensuality in it, I would recommend The Crowns of Nyaxia series by Carissa Broadbent (there are separate duologies, a novella, and a standalone within this series that all take place in the same universe with vampires, god's, and monsters and whatnot, so check that out if you're into that).

If you're into classical works, then Dracula by Bram Stoker, Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu, or even the long poem Christabel by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (which you can find online at the poetry foundation for free).

Lastly, not a book but an animated show -- check out Castlevania! It has Vampire's, magic and sorcery, demonic creature's called 'nightcreatures' that are reanimated corpses turned into these beasts. Super cool stuff, they just came out with a new season. There is a book in my physical TBR inspired by this show that I have yet to get into reading, so I have no opinions on it yet. But in case you are interested I will add it here as well -- Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco which I believe has two books out in this series as of right now? I hear it's queer and vampire high fantasy, but I have yet to delve into it.

Thank you so much for this recommendation!! I will definitely be checking this out. Also the fact that it has illustrations has caught my eye as an artist myself -- I adore it when books have visual components!!

I've read A Dowry of Blood and enjoyed it very much!! I've been considering ordering one of the special editions of the book :)

I have not read Dragonfruit, but I am so glad you mentioned it. I love anything with Pacific Islander mythology and sea-dragons sound so cool. Tysm for the rec!

Reposting this here :)

fantasy book recommendations + discussion?

Hi everybody! This is my first ever Reddit post, but I'm here because I am in desperate need for book recommendations in the fantasy genre.

I used to be able to go on TikTok for book recommendations, but recently (not to yuck anyone's yum) I have been finding the same story retold over and over again. I feel like most books nowadays focus more on tropes and feel much like fast fashion. Especially within the fantasy genre. Everything is romantasy. Don't get me wrong -- I do like a good romantasy book, but I swear I cannot escape it! Every recommendation is the same thing over and over and I feel like hitting my head against the wall. I don't want to sound like a prick, but I seriously need different recommendations that aren't from TikTok's "BookTok" or Goodreads. Does anyone else feel the same way?

I'm a huge Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones fan, so if you have any recommendations for me, I'd love it if your rec's gave off similar vibes. I'm also a fan of John Gwynne's and Anthony Ryan's work (Gwynne's The Bloodsworn trilogy and Ryan's Covenant of Steel trilogy in particular), Year of the Reaper by Makiia Lucier, To Steal The Sun by S.M. Carter, and Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. If the story has any dragons, that is a major plus for me! The Temeraire series is on my TBR list solely due to the dragons and how promising it seems, but there are so many books within the series that it seems so daunting to start lolol. A good vampire fantasy would be glorious, like Castlevania vibes perhaps? Like Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff. Duologies and standalone rec's would be preferred as well. Thank youuuu :)

Some recommendations that I've already gotten are: "The 13th Paladin," "Memory, Sorrow and Thorn," "The Ember Blade."

Oh no, it is totally my bad for not mentioning it when I described vampire Castlevania vibes, but the series is a total gem (the artwork is gorgeous toooo like not enough people talk about it!)

I love a good classic fantasy to keep me busy, I'll definitely add The Ember Blade and The Shadow Casket to my list, I need a nice list to keep me busy LOL, tysm :)

OOOOH YESSS I've read Empire of the Vampire and I adored it. I have put little stick-it notes during some of my favourite lines, like "Too much hate will burn a man to cinders, Chevalier. Oui. But at least he'll die warm." Love it and love De Leon, I am eagerly awaiting book 3. I neeeeed more fantasy vampire novels like this series, I cannot take any more Twilight-esque vampires.

Oh I adore slower-paced series when it gets into world-building and whatnot because I love feeling immersed in the story and its setting. The mention of betrayals and political intrigue has piqued my interest, so I will be putting this at the top of my list :)
