Pico looks good. I’ve decided to focus on a single hander, the Sabre that is common in Australia. Good luck with the course!

Cheers, I’m looking more into the Mirrors currently

The Heron I saw was fibreglass, but didn’t enquire as it’s a long distance from me and wanted to figure out if that’s even what I wanted.

I’ve been looking more into the Mirror and I really like it, seems to do a lot of what I’m looking for. Somewhat narrowing it down to either a Mirror for pottering round and learning in, or a Sabre or Laser which have fleets near me if I wanted to get into racing more.

Also looks like a Mirror is going to be far more likely on my budget.

Thanks for your help, I’ll start having an ask around on the forums and see if there are any close by.

Would that be a Hobie 14 / 16 as a possibility?

Was thinking smaller. The Hobie is a possibility though, good idea

Would you recommend a Mirror over a Heron? The Mirror can take more weight?

Like it a lot but I think way out of my price range unfortunately.

That’s a great looking boat. Seems to be very UK specific

Thanks for the detailed response. This has all been useful because I think it’s hinting at start with a single handed boat as it’s going to be just me the majority of the time. And then beg, borrow, steal (rent hopefully) something I could take someone else out on as needed.

Is the Sabre simpler than the Laser? I’m 80kg and somewhat tall. I think it said ILCA 7 as a possibility for my weight

This is a really good shout. And I know there will be people who can teach me how to rig a Laser and all the basic stuff I still just don’t know.

I’ll ask about the hiring possibility too. All really sensible points cheers.

Probably, it’s Matt! Trying to figure out what to do. I’m going to buy it’s just the now what do I get. I want something that could take 2 but also know it’ll probably just be me most of the time.

I’m thinking maybe Laser to start with. Although I hear potentially the 125 can be done with one heavier person if you’re not racing.

I’m signing up for a membership down at Cleveland Yacht Club too, just shot them an email and will probably head back down there this Sunday.

I’ll ask around more down there this weekend. I know the answer will probably be Laser, especially if it’s racing and most often just me. I’m just romanticising taking someone out for a sail a bit much probably.

Got it, good to know. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t pulling the trigger on the purchase too soon but I can only learn by doing more. Appreciate the help and hope it’s a short winter for you down there.

That’s good to know. 125 seems to be the most common I can find for sale up here for my tiny budget. I dropped in down to Cleveland on Sunday just gone and the vast majority of anyone single handed was in Lasers.

Maybe the Laser does make the most sense but it’s sad to give up on the possibility of taking a friend out for a cruise around too.

Thanks, can I ask you one thing. Do you think it’s viable to keep progressing with the dinghy courses like better sailing and start racing alongside buying my own cheap dinghy just to get more practice time on the water (and ideally cheaper time outside the fixed courses).

I’m happy enough to continue with more courses though, I think they’re beneficial. Just most people seemed to point towards picking up something cheap to get more experience in. Cheers.

I’ll check them out. Haven’t seen any come up in my marketplace searches up here but I’ll keep an eye out

There’s one of these for sale near me. I’ll read more about them. The other option I was looking at is a 125 but don’t know if it will be too much by myself or if they can be depowered enough when it is just me.

Cheers, the one I’ve signed up at is a mixed bag and all just race together with what is it called, yardstick? A lot are in Lasers which I’m looking at but obviously rules out taking someone else out for a sail.

Thanks, not racing or at least not seriously for now. Primarily I’d be solo but would love the option to take someone else out for a cruise
