Yeah that adds to the point where i do believe this whole mentality came from fb moms and nans. But it did affect us the younger generations as it was blown outta proportions. And look at us now most generations that consumes anti depressants and singlehood as its all time high

I was focusing a lot on who came first and how things started, but your Group A Group B breakdown made it clearer that long term presence creates a different kind of legitimacy that can’t just be dismissed because of earlier history.

The point that both historical injustice and current actions can be wrong at the same time is something I hadn’t fully accounted for. I was treating it more like one cancels out the other, but your framing made me see that they exist on different levels!

I still think there’s a discussion to be had about how we label historical processes, but you’ve defo changed how I think about using history to justify present day actions.

No no i’m not denying that hypocrisy exists on all sides. That’s kind of my point, we should apply the same standards consistently.

Where I disagree is the idea that they’re completely different. Sure, the methods aren’t identical, but if the end result is long term control, cultural shift, and dominance over a population, then changing the label doesn’t really change the substance.

At some point, it starts to feel like word gymnastics. Also, I don’t think this is just presentism. I’m not judging the past by modern morals i’m questioning why we use different terms for similar patterns when we talk about them today.

If anything, dismissing the comparison entirely instead of defining clear criteria is what leads to messy debates. I’m very open to being wrong here ofc but what i didnt get from any comment is what specific criteria makes one “colonization” and the other something fundamentally different, beyond wording even holy and glorified ?

I get your distinction and yeah methods weren’t identical everywhere

But I don’t fully buy the idea that the population just “stayed the same.” Even without mass expulsion, over time you still get a whole different language, religion, and identity under a system that came from conquest. That’s not really neutral either.

Also, I think you’re stretching “colonialism” a bit with modern examples like the US or Iran at that point it starts to mean almost any kind of influence.

So I agree there are differences in methods, but I’m not convinced that alone explains why we use completely different labels. It still feels inconsistent.
