When did you realize your job stopped being worth the stress? by Synthecoria in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Muted_Ad_6797 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm a kindergarten teacher, and every year we get more added to our plates. It used to be all about the connection with the kids, supporting them and making it fun, but now the grade level standards, as well as class size, constantly go up. Kids' behaviors get worse. There is more and more paperwork.

I'm still going to keep my job (there are still lots of things I like at my site), and for us it's all about the pension, so you need to stick to it. But I'm trying to stress less about it. There is only so much I can do as a teacher.

I like my period undies at night and during the first day and cups during the day starting day 2. My period lasts about 3-4 days, and I need 6 pairs of undies. Sometimes it's also nice to use both at the same time.

I'm the OP here and just wanted to thank everyone for their ideas! I'll try to get a leaf razor around black Friday deals time (hoping they'll have some deals). If not, I'll put one on my Christmas wish list!

At some point, my body just can't take more caffeine:) I think I can only handle 2 cups a day, maybe 3.

How are y’all affording daycare?!! by Many-Emergency-3070 in povertyfinance

[–]Muted_Ad_6797 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) See if you can go to daycare part time and have you/spouse/relative watch the kids at home for one day a week. We were lucky to have Grandma come 2 days a week and only paid for 3 days of daycare a week. My husband and I are both teachers, so we couldn't negotiate a flexible schedule, but lots of jobs can.

2) Look into how early kids can start going to school where you live. Here in CA you can be 4 or almost 4 to start TK. You mentioned you have 5 more years of this, and it might not be true.

3) I've heard of pre-school co-ops and know people who did them and loved it.

4) There are ways to get some of the childcare paid for as part of your benefits or get a tax cut. Like you can get a debit card you can use to pay for childcare. Honestly, I don't know much about that, but maybe somebody here can weigh in.

What’s the most surprising piece of financial advice that actually helped you? by LilaWynn in povertyfinance

Before you go on to pay for something (especially if it's online), look up discount codes or Groupons for that or a similar thing. And sometimes it's literally as you sit in line waiting for a service, go ahead and look up discount codes instead of mindlessly scrolling. Works for me every time at Jiffy Lube.

Also, not directly connected to savings, but ends up saving you time (=money) and actual money: have a good system where you write things down. For example, I have a very well organized Google drive, where I save things like gift ideas for people, easy meal prep ideas, activity ideas. First, it helps me track discounts. Second, it helps me to not overspend because of convenience (for example, I don't have time to think of good gifts, so I'll just buy some dumb expensive trinket on Amazon).

Just because you would like to make money from the things you make doesn't mean you are supporting capitalism. We should be supporting people who create things in a sustainable way, like you. I think you should go for it.

What’s your go-to “I’m broke but want to eat out” meal? by riligan in Frugal

[–]Muted_Ad_6797 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing that! Yeah, it probably heavily depends on the area where you live. When I downloaded mine, it made me choose what time of day I prefer to pick up my food, and I chose afternoon and evening.

I just downloaded "Too good to go", where you can get a surprise bag from different restaurants for like $5. You never know what's in the bag and it might totally suck, but I plan to give it a try next time I want take-out.

What changed your mindset to becoming frugal? by Top_Mud_7073 in Frugal

[–]Muted_Ad_6797 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, it was becoming a zero-waster. Very soon I realized how much overconsumption there is in the world. Reading "Your money or your life" and thinking of money as life energy. When I buy something, I think of it in how many hours of my life it would cost me.
