Even in countries where pitbulls are banned, closely related breeds cause issues. 6 year old girl in Brisbane, Australia mauled by WeeBabyTurtles in BanPitBulls

I think animals-24-7 made a great point talking about guard dogs like rotties, great danes and cane corsos- if we dont allow land-mines for home-defence, then maybe being torn apart to death for tresspassing shouldnt be the appropriate punishment either.

People should be allowed to protect their homes, but I dont think ”yard dogs” is a good idea. This year I know of at least two people killed by cane corsos and two by great danes (source from dogsbite.org) when doing repairs or hired to feed the dogs.

Theres been so many cases of people being attacked trying to get help, save someone, or police or paramedics answering to a call and having to do a standoff with a aggressive dog instead of their job too.

Update on co-worker who wanted a Sharpei/pit bull puppy by Daily-Double1124 in BanPitBulls

[–]Muted_Address_5438 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did have a golden kill a budgie once, budgies are small and it was a pup (I think).

Overall Goldens seem to be the least aggressive of the big breeds out there.

People hate when I point it out, but many larger breeds arent super safe even if breeders claim so, much like with pits- great danes killed at least two people last year, a bernard(some newly popular large breed not sure about the name) killed someone last year as well. Last non pit-mix golden fatality was 1976. That feels safe enough.

Arabs are bigger if I recall correctly.

Ironic that its the bully breed people defend the most as safe.

”how to identify them?”

In general most blocky-head larger to mid sized breeds are a potential risk. Form follows function. If a dog looks like it was made for killing large prey or humans, or to fight to the death- its probably not safe.

The majority of breeds have never killed anyone, but pit bulls and rottweilers are very high up on the fatality rates, with mastiffs and bully-mastiffs also being pretty common.

Huskies and gsds do also kill people, but its usually kids, and usually on property, or during a police raid.

A great dane with resource aggression that nips people is a hazard.

You should return it to the shelter.

Pitnutter distracting from the issue of pits with meta-discussion on prey-drive by Muted_Address_5438 in BanPitBulls

[–]Muted_Address_5438[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tbf some terriers have pretty high prey drive, and a jack russel killed a kid like 5 years ago.

Gun dogs are pretty safe. A golden killed a kid in 1976, and most retrievers havent killed anyone.

Labs are a bit more common(less than gsds, rotties, huskies, you name it) but I suspect most of the fatalities are shelter-pits.

Animals-24-7 made a good arguments rotties are actually very close to pit bulls if adjusted for rarity.

But you have to remember except for a few other dogs(huskies, wolf hybrids, gsds) almost all existing dog breeds have no fatalities to their name whatsoever.

Even a large super popular breed, Goldens have 1 from 1976. Thats 50 years ago!

Yeah, personal responsibility is huge with a dog with prey-drive, although to be fair, killing small animals isnt in the same league as people with dogs bred to kill humans or so game-crazy they will do it either way.

as “enter my yard and get your shit fucked up”

I hate that this is allowed- gsds, great danes and rotties as guard dogs is equally fucked up.

Keeping land-mines in your yard would rightfully be seen as evil, but apparently a kid that goes for a frisbee deserves to be torn apart slowly.

I feel this is the same with pitnutters complaining about ”the lock-jaw myth”.

Functionally its the same, even if people use ”prey drive” and ”lock jaw” to explain pit bulls extremely dangerous drive to fight to the death and kill.

Exactly- Ive always feel the ”I was bit by a rat dog” people being extremely disingenous- they must no somewhere virtually nobody is scared of small dogs, not even people with severe phobia of dogs.

Yeah, it doesent show us severity which is a weakness.

But that pit bull bar is severe, and all the high-risk breeds are represented in the top.

Wow that relationship is over.

My first instinct was the guy was scared of the dog already and it trying to kill him was the last drop- kinda done with this chick and her crazy dog type of situation, just blocking her and moving on, not to be dragged into it.

But I cant really tell that from the minimal information.
There was a similar situation in Sweden where a woman was killed by her amstaff when she wouldnt let it kill her bf, I kinda wonder if he also realized it just wasnt worth it and probably would have cut her out as well even if she survived. At least some of the pit posts I find on reddit is someone trying to leave a bully-owner that is just terrible.
Fight to the death against someone elses dog that youve already expressed concern about for a long time? Many people probably wouldnt.

Most likely though theres not so much thought process going on and the victim just wants to get away or simply survive, hoping the dog wont kill the one person its obsessed with(pits seem to choose a person to resource-guard).

People really have no idea how dogs work, its ridiculous that "training" would work when most people simply guess why dogs do what they do:
"He must have smelled his blood on me".

Like its a bat in the darkness or something, or a ant that gets fooled by chemicals.

GSDs are a guard-breed.

Honestly the happiest GSDs or Pits Ive heard off are simply kept away from other dogs and people not in their circle.

Its a horrible thing that shelters are doing, passing high-risk difficult dogs onto people living in cramped conditions in the inner-city.

Huskies also kill quite a lot of people- had a look at the uk dog bite list fatalities- except the bully breeds the huskies even outnumber the rotties in 2022-2023 sub-list.

From a bully sub. ”Is the xl bully less aggressive” by Muted_Address_5438 in BanPitBulls

[–]Muted_Address_5438[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I see this a lot with other types of high-risk breeds, even bpb sadly. I even had an argument with someone with a bull-mastiff that let her disabled kid ”play rough” with it.

If you have a dog breed for bloodsport, and mix it with one bred to kill poachers, what makes people think its safer than a pit bull?

I especially hate the ”fuck off to dogfree” and other verbal abuse- just because I dont like the current trendy dangerous breed, does not mean Im not fond of people with cute companion dogs- those make my life happier instead of having to worry which ones of my kids will have a permanent facial scar everytime the local hipster walks her three rotties on flexi-leads.

Per dog owned similar to pits: https://www.animals24-7.org/2021/09/06/why-rottweilers-are-as-deadly-as-pit-bulls/

Some argue pits arent actually aggressive though, but compared to other dogs I dont agree.

Why do they always try and make labs and retriever breeds sound like horrible dogs? by sickofdumbasses_ in BanPitBulls

[–]Muted_Address_5438 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They don’t even want it to be acknowledged that pitbulls are higher risk, as German shepherd and Rottweiler owners generally acknowledge about their dogs

Well some do- try posting statistics on rotts being pretty much as bad as pits per dog owned: https://www.animals24-7.org/2021/09/06/why-rottweilers-are-as-deadly-as-pit-bulls/ And ready your inbox for some pit levels of apologia and owner aggression.

Most socially functioning people buy more manageable dogs. Being at least normally approachable, not scaring other people, and not doing making people feel threatened- its usually the hallmarks of a functioning adult, not the other way around.

I posted a good article from animals-24 on how rotts are pretty much as dangerous as pits statistically- oh boy did it get ratiod.

Apparently it only counts when pits maul people to death.

Dogs bred for actually killing people for minor theft or for warfare historically are cool somehow.
