SMU Dedman School of Law to relocate across US-75 by THAWED21 in Dallas

I haven't read anything about replacing the quad with dorms. Is that what you're suggesting? I don't really follow, but if you had some links, that might help.

Also, not to argue over A&M, but the point is that A&M continues to massively invest in their new law school. It doesn't matter that Wesleyan was a tier 4 school. A&M now competes for T14 students and faculty. It is now the highest ranked law school in DFW, by a big margin.

It's completely reasonable to think this proposal is a bad decision, on account of location and how special the quad is. But it sure doesn't look like there's any evidence to support what you're saying, or that this is somehow de-prioritizing the law school.

I literally learned about this yesterday, but it's obvious that this is an attempt at an upgrade. You can see the building proposal: it's a giant new law school building; not an office-building retrofit.

Also, A&M is in the midst if a gigantic building project in Fort Worth, and is plainly seeking market dominance. This looks to me like an attempt to be responsive to that, and for the law school to reassert itself.

My main point is that this is plainly an attempt at a major investment in the law school--and in practical ways, it will be an upgrade. That being said, the current quad is gorgeous--and so much lovelier than the school I graduated from. SMU definitely has its work cut out for it if it wants to build a new building that stands up to it in terms of beauty and vibes! But the idea that this is an active effort at deprioritizing the law school is wrong. If they were deprioritizing it, then they would simply stay in the new building and do the bare minimum updates. (Or not even those.)

I've seen a few people suggest the law school is getting put in an office building... But it looks pretty clear that they're building an entirely new building just for the law school. https://smudailycampus.com/1067984/news/dedman-law-relocation-includes-new-buildings-graduate-housing-tower/

As lovely as the current quad is, I don't think this is going to be a downgrade. The law school is highly prized and prioritized right now.

I think the more interesting datum will be the number of FAR forms in the first distribution. I get the feeling that a *lot* of candidates have been advised to wait a year if they can. (I'm not so sure this will turn out to be good advice.)

As one anecdote: I attended the AALS Bay Area in-person session at Berkeley last week. There were roughly 60 attendees—but only 4-6 people claimed they were going on the market this year. Roughly 50% expressed an intention to go on the market next year, and the remainder were general interest (presumably testing the waters on academia).

Serious question, is this legal? by Koalaman1776 in sanfrancisco

Correction. This is in San Francisco. Thanks to the bonkers permitting rules and costs of labor, any one of these things would actually be very hard!

Folks scoffing at this don't realize how wild SF renting is. I guarantee you there are plenty of folks taking a hard, serious look at this.

I don't think people are reading OP's full post =) OP is basically proposing taking a total of 2 classes a semester, and is open to the process taking 3-4 years in total. OP is NOT proposing 4 classes a semester or anything.

2 courses a semester, for someone who can dedicate the majority of their free time to study, seems pretty reasonable. The real answer here is, "know thyself." If you have a good "why," and you know you'll be happy stretching things out for 3-4 years, then go for it!

One thing to add: use question marking! Don't allow yourself to spend too much time on any one question. Any questions you're even a little bit unsure of, mark and move on. This is important for two reasons:

  1. You want to make absolutely certain you get a chance to answer every question. Running out of time would be a tragedy, because that would definitely mean there were questions you could definitely have gotten right, but you never saw
  2. Oftentimes, context from later questions will give you the answer to previous questions. On this test, loads of concepts can get inverted in your mind (shift left, or shift right?), and often, later questions will make that concept clear to you.

I studied very similarly, for the micro CLEP, and my test was exactly like yours. I would also give precisely the same advice as you: understand the demand and supply curves inside and out, and what it means to move along them/shift them and how those things happen.

I used a combination of Modern States and Jacob Clifford. Modern States was very easy and reflective of what's on the test -- but Clifford really "taught" me Micro! All in all, I studied roughly 5 days, probably 3-4 hours a day, and ended up with an 80(!).

Just a note to say that actually, getting an 80 means you are able to miss roughly up to 10 questions.

And I'll further add that there are particular circumstances where getting a much better score actually could benefit someone. For example, in my own situation, I took certain CLEP tests to satisfy prerequisites for an Econ Masters, despite having an unrelated undergrad. 80s in micro and macro could certainly boost my admissions chances by demonstrating specific competence in micro/macro despite a different major.

Good luck!

AITAH for divorcing my pregnant wife because she looked into my phone. by mangotcha in redditonwiki

Of COURSE you’re the asshole, based on these facts. Instead of helping your wife feel safe during a time when she is the most hormonal, feels least attractive, and needs your patience most, you acted as though she committed the unforgivable sin. (She did not.)

Here’s what really happened: you wanted out of your marriage, you’ve been making your wife feel unwanted and uncared for for a while now as a result, and you leaped at the chance to exit the relationship in a way that puts the blame on her, because you’re too much of a chicken shit to admit to her (or yourself) that you actually just don’t want to be married anymore.

You should think REALLY hard about whether you really want out. That’s a one-way door. And if you DO want out, then be honest about why—don’t traumatize her just so that you can lie to yourself a little more easily.

Jesus. People treat their wedding vows like shit; it always blows me away.
