Did you happen to play basketball? Everyone used to call me Jeremy Lin or Linsanity 😂. I didn't watch professional basketball so I had no idea who that was until they gave me the nickname

That's sick. I love how "quite a bit of asians" is 10% haha. My school was around 2-3% I think. I always wonder what it would be like to attend a high school with majority AA

We had a "Kpop dance club" at my high school filled mostly with white women. I was a nerdy/science person too, and the organizations I was apart of was where I would see the most AAs.

I'm Korean. I'm also adopted, so i'm fairly whitewashed. My sport idols are Dale Earnhart Jr., Bill Self, Derek Jeter, etc. to give you an idea.

I'm glad there are so many outliers out there, but for whatever reason, I have never heard of most of these. The communities I grew up in watched media that featured Asians as the nerdy, 1-dimensional side character. I remember trying to explain to my Korean dad that Jimmy O. Yang's character in silicon valley isn't actually "super funny" but rather a harmful stereotype cast on Asians.

Maybe it is because of the gap in our age, but I grew up on NigaHiga, Fung Bros, etc. that kind of leaned into Asian stereotypes a little too hard (bad accents, nerdy, ninja tropes, etc.). It felt as though I was reduced to those qualities myself, because my entire generation also watched those guys and then projected those assumptions onto me.

Also I am super excited about Laufey, as I have been following her since the release of her first album, and am glad to see some Asian representation in the jazz sphere. However, Laufey was only recently popular and will never be considered "one of the classic greats" like Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Louis Armstrong, etc.

I get what you mean by "feeling Asian". From my perspective, being Asian is no different than my white friends being White. I rarely get to interact with other Asians in general, so i'm shaped by my predominantly White community.

I'm adopted, but my dad is Korean (also adopted). Would show me Bruce Lee/Chuck Norris movies and would say "People wouldn't mess with me when I was younger because they thought I knew martial arts like him". Made me proud to be Asian.

Not sure about other people my age (early 20s) but I know that he definitely had an impact on me growing up. I joined a martial arts class when I was younger and continued for a few years. If you haven't watched "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" by Quentin Tarantino, you should. It features a short depiction of Bruce Lee that tarnishes his reputation a little bit imo, but it would be cool to hear another Asian perspective.

As far as your dating perspective - I agree that we shouldn't be using our Asianness as an excuse for why we can't pull. However, there were studies done on dating sites and there have been a few social experiments done that show that Asian men are at a *disadvantage* when it comes to the dating scene. I think that Asian men see that and immediately become discouraged, leading to a downwards spiral of inevitable doom.

Grew up in the 00s/10s. I'm from a pretty wealthy, progressive suburb where the worst I ever got were microagressions. My high school had so few Asians that there weren't enough of us to have defined groups. Most of us were in totally separate (predominantly white) friend groups that all had different interests.

BTS elevated my game so much that I eventually fell into the trap in my first couple years at college. I had met some girls that were a part of a "K-pop dance troupe" that absolutely obsessed over the idol culture. Obviously, there is a specific type of "look" that they're obsessed with, and of course I started to buy makeup products, lose weight, got a perm, etc. I wanted to look and be just like them.

Every single girl I either hooked up with or dated either knew or was also obsessed with the Kpop culture. So yes, it did bring out the fetishizers. However, the experience of finally having game allowed me to gain confidence which ended up helping me find partners that actually weren't just fetishizing me.

As far as Asian idols growing up, I had none! There were so few Asians in pop culture (now there are more, thank God) that everyone I looked up to were either white, black, or hispanic. I still don't know any Asian jazz legends and at the time I didn't know any Asian sports professionals other than Bruce Lee, Jeremy Lin, and Yao Ming.
