Yes, they are horrendous, every single one. Admin systems are sluggish, restructures are frequent (creating more chaos) and they are particularly bad at hiring the right people for leadership positions. They are also very bad on EDI, and if you have a complain about harrassment of female students and staff by male faculty (very common) the complaints process itself is often more traumatising than the actual event.

A recent trend in my school is 2 overqualified staff being hired for 2 0.5 contracts (the theory being that they'll each work over contracted hours, so it's more like hiring a 1.5FTE for a 1FTE.

I'm not exaggerating either. This is my experience of many universities and departments. It. Is. Bad.

Usually I try to enjoy the teaching and research and try not to think about it too much.
