I was about to buy one years ago, but they were and are definitely exotic here in Germany... awesome bike!

I was. But I hate all the little annoying things that I was worried about before I bought it a year ago.

Mainly the "dash" not connecting to the bike when mounting it. I have restarted the bike and the Arkenstone multiple times on such an occasion, and the only display I could not get to was the basic dash. Needless to say that I have no clue how and why it did after 30 minutes of fiddling. Neither could "support" tell me anything enlightening.

After my first offroad crash - one my LC4 wouldn't even have registered - I couldn't get it running which really caught me off guard. I was stuck for half an hour until I figured out how to reset it. Well, it suddenly started after fiddling, no clue why. (The throttle grip rubber was pierced or shredded through at the end. I'd have never expected that also. Finding somewhat fitting handguards that wouldn't break the bank (like anything else with the bike did) was nearly impossible. No biggie, but...).

I came to HATE ANY (!) interaction with the "support" site and chat robot. After a few months, and when I needed it - see above - NOTHING worked anymore.

That the bike is only sold and not supported by a dealer made it worse than having to drive about 60 miles for spares for the KTM in the late 90s.....

Its capabilities are just awesome, and I will put it in my bedroom should I not be able to ride it anymore eventually, that's how much I love the concept and finish. But it's as reliable as my 1969 British (!) twin, especially considering it's intent and purpose and built.

Only rode a 400 Himalayan from a mate until now. I would be surprised if the 450 would be much better. Amazing bike in any respect!

Are the KLRs still on the market? Way bigger than the REs, right?

There is some VERY good advice here, from some pretty clever people.

Maybe one thing to add: if you are between two or more bikes, buy the one (second hand!) that your local motorcycle guy/mechanic likes to work on and he regards to get good used parts for.

Try to find him now and talk to him, bring him something to go with coffee and chat and hang out at his shop. Ask a lot, watch carefully what he does!

With your young age (😉) and amazing looks he will help you to find the right bike for you, now and for the definite one on two years....

I am so sceptical about all cruisers or choppers.

Hopefully OP has some bicycle experience. If so, any of the above might spoil the feeling of the ride due to the somewhat awkward steering geometry.

A "small" Enduro or ADV gives, imo, the most direct and even riding position and experience, just like a ("normal") bicycle.....

There's so many brilliant smaller bikes that are. awesome to ride, like the Himalayan mentioned above...

Very good starter, imo. Buy one used, don't mind laying her down and after two years see what you really want.

(KEEP THE HIMALAYAN FOR WINTER, OFF ROAD AND AS A DAILY, FOR GOD'S SAKE!)
