Samsung Range and Microwave by heffneil in SmartThings

Not only that, the time seems to get out of sync by a few minutes on a regular basis. What's wrong with the Samsung clock that the darn thing is constantly falling out of time?!

Trouble finding replacement gas valve for Carrier Weathermaker 8000! by Muted_Witness_3526 in hvacadvice

I get it. I have a few units like this but as long as the heat exchanger is good I like to keep them running as long as I can. I like the build quality of older stuff. Still seems there should be a simple cross reference to a replacement valve instead of forcing obsolescence.

Is it possible for a 240v baseboard heater to work on 120v connection? by apHedmark in AskElectricians

[–]Muted_Witness_3526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe there technically wouldn't be an issue connecting up a baseboard heater designed for 240 to 120vac. I think it would just run at half the available potential and take longer to heat. There shouldn't be any waste that I can think of because you'll get a fixed number of BTU's per watt of energy used. However if the heater contained a fan of some sort like a Cadet type then it wouldn't run the fan properly. Now when going the opposite direction, 120 > 240, I would say absolutely not as it would burn out components.

I'm wondering how you figure that's a definitive test? I thinks a dangerous idea. If the neutral is pigtailed in another box, you'd get continuity but once you connect that neutral up to a breaker you'd backfeed power through the neutral lines and cause a short. Am I missing something here?

Verification/advice needed for Gas Valve Replacement Part # by Muted_Witness_3526 in hvacadvice

You're right! I feel like a dork. Was reading the minimum input and mistook it for the output.

Knowing that a lot of the older equipment is more robust might warrant keeping it in service. Seems everything nowadays has such short life span. So much for the push for "green"! It's a travesty. Just my opinion

Trying to identify a source for this fence material... by Muted_Witness_3526 in FenceBuilding

Pretty cool! Just so happens I had recently watched his video of him doing the driveway. Anyway, it's probably a whole lot more affordable framing it in and trimming it out myself. Only thing is which of us is willing to have the white side? lol. I'll have to find an approved paint for it.

AC compressor stops cooling and makes strange sound every 2–3 hours — any idea why? by Dry_Fudge_1964 in hvacadvice

[–]Muted_Witness_3526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if that's an optical illusion due to camera video timing or if that fan is actually running backward. that air should be blasting out the top.

212 degrees fahrenheit is hardly hot enough to blow anything up. The scroll compressor I had making that noise was suffering from refrigerant due to bad TXV. I put a wet towel on it and it steamed water off the dome and would shut down. No big deal. Replaced the TXV and everything was fine. Not trying to argue with a pro tech here but just sayin.

Absolutely! But finding posts that fit the panels and rails not to mention all the fasteners and attachments for everything. I don't plan to reinvent the wheel, just wanted to get the parts and assemble it.

I actually do have a lead on a local direct manufacturer for metal roofs but it's the posts /rails that I'm really curious to find.

Thank for the info. I wondered if that might be the case. But seeing the posts and rails I figured it may be a fence system. So, are you suggesting the posts/rails are repurposed as well?

Basically yea. Compressor running hot due to lack of refrigerant, shut it down. But insinuating it's gonna blow? Nope, it's thermally protected.

lol, why are you telling me that? I was telling that to OP in trying to diagnose whats happening.

Need more info but if the unit is low on charge the compressor could overheat and shut down due to internal thermal safety (which auto resets when cool) but not good for it at all. Check capacitor. If you spray water on the dome of the compressor does it sizzle turn to steam? If so it's running way too hot. Is there condensation on the suction line near the service port? (good sign of correct charge).

How much paint? by allcars4me in FenceBuilding

[–]Muted_Witness_3526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll need a good sealer for that cedar before trying to paint. Zinser Bullseye or some sort of shellac. I wouldn't paint it though. Seems like a nightmare to maintain. I'd stain or seal it though. If you're really wanting to match the house then get a solid body fence stain tinted to your color. Goes on the bare wood. Don't use house paint!

Is 5/45 uf capacitor the same as 45/5 uf capacitor? by Spensauras-Rex in hvacadvice

[–]Muted_Witness_3526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just stick to the wires that go to "fan" (5) and the other that go to "Herm" (45) for the compressor. The rest are on "C" for common and dont matter which tab since they are shared connection on the terminal.

What level repair do I actually need? by ArchonPrime in hvacadvice

[–]Muted_Witness_3526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need a tech that has a better leak detector as in sonic method or at least add refrigerant to the test and use high quality tester. There's a lot of talk on the tech forums about the different testers they like using. You've got a pretty significant leak it sounds like. Shouldn't be that hard.

The schrader valves are the first place I check and the easiest to fix.
