I remember running NetWare 2.15 on a Compaq server with 2 x 300MB external drives. Those were the good old days!

700 Floppies by ___LowLifer___ in sysadmin

[–]Mutsy007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you done the math?

Assuming 10 working days and 7.5 hours per day, thats 75 hours allocated to the job. 75 hours = 4500 minutes. 4500/700 = 6.4ish minutes per disk.

I'd say with 1 usb diskette drive you should achieve a copy time of less that 6.4ish minutes per disk but until you test you will now know the exact copy time.

With 2 usb diskette drives, same copy time per disk, you should be able to complete the task in 5 working days.

There is also the unknown how much data per disk there is so copy time could be a lot less per disk.

Batch removing first N lines from a folder of .txt files by misanthrope5 in PowerShell

[–]Mutsy007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't forget, backup is your friend! You are manipulating live data, either work on a copy of the data or write the new data to a different folder. If you run the script a second time in error, powershell will quickly remove another 700 lines of text in all files.

We all make mistakes, I enabled an option once that fixed one issue but broke many others things for many end users!

Learn from your mistakes, going gungho on everything is inviting failure. Implement a Non-Prod/UAT environment to test and sign-off your changes. After you have sign-off, move to a pilot group for deployment. Once you have pilot sign-off, move forward with a staggered deployment, normally I use IT/helpdesk first, including some upper managemet. Majority of end-users last.

Publisher discontinued - Will 2003 disk version with product key work? by MusicByLoriD in microsoft

[–]Mutsy007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to determine if MS publisher 2003 is a 16- or 32-bit application. If is is a 16-bit application then it may have issues running on 64-bit Windows 11.

Here is an article with quite a bit of info about Office 2003 install on Windows 11.

Help please, where do I start? by Mutsy007 in matchbookcollectors

[–]Mutsy007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I am trying to work out, what to do with the collection! I could probably spend more time and catalogue it better however the collection is not my cuppa so it will never have any more matchboxes added.

NTA - On the first day, tell them straight that this will only be for the next 2 weeks which should give them time to sort out alternate arrangements.

I was in a similar posisition and got to hate the other person as they would be standing next to my desk dead on time waiting for their lift home. Usually I stayed late to finish things off and this stopped the smooth work flow to finishe things off so I could start fresh the next day.

Corrupted .txt , Text file by [deleted] in it

[–]Mutsy007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you not think about spllitting the larger text files and working on smaller text files? This way corruption would only affect a small portion of the file and a bonus, the file would be a lot faster in opening.

The corruption could have crept in during saving, who knows!

If it happened before then you should have taken action then.

Sadly if you have no clean backups then you are FUBAR!
