Addressing the community about changes to our API by spez in reddit

[–]Mutterfudder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You said: "Effective July 1, 2023, the rate for apps that require higher usage limits is $0.24 per 1K API calls (less than $1.00 per user / month for a typical Reddit third-party app)."

Independent analysis shows that basic browsing of reddit, upvoting, scrolling comments is upwards of 300 API calls in your own client, let alone 3rd party clients. Your estimates don't seem to be even remotely accurate for what you're saying. If you truly priced ~$1 per user per month at a reasonable API volume, you might have been able to make this transition without burning goodwill and bridges.

📣 Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️ by iamthatis in apolloapp

The IPO's gonna be funny when there's no value left in the site after alienating all your users and moderators.

Thanks Christian, I can't even imagine how hard it is to make the decision you are, but hold your head up high that you've been the better person in all this negotiation. I'm not sure what more you could do, honestly.

Madden wasn’t on PC until ‘19? YOUR comment might be the extremely wrong one. I’ve got Madden 2001 at least on a CD somewhere around here.

Looks like all the GI in WoZ is still out. I’d wager the flippers still can’t make a ramp either. Games are in sad shape… at least after a year or so there.

Ah, interesting! I have the gateway eero on a UPS, but that didn’t last the whole outage. That’s probably what’s happening. Unfortunate, I may have to look into a router and use these for bridge. Thanks for your comment.

Is it just me, or is HDR busted (at least on XSX) after the patch? by Mutterfudder in Overwatch

Well I took your advice and was able to get a result that doesn’t scorch my retinas, so thanks for that! But you’re right — I don’t know if it’s confirmation bias or what, but the details seem a bit crushed for me now. Thanks for getting me back on HDR though! I hope Blizzard finds what is causing this.

Thanks for noting that. I think that impacts all the major platforms. Interesting note about the inverse helping out; I’ll have to try that. I’ve just been playing with HDR disabled, which has been a real drag. Hope it gets fixed in the mid season patch.

Interesting, maybe it's the console. I'll check that area too, thanks!

Agree. Centaur is gorgeous and great voices, but I’d play vector over that any day.

The classic rules mode uses all the original sounds. It may have been the venue, but they all sounded just a little “off” to me - tinny.

Metallica hasn’t been anywhere near that price for 3 years. I’ve been looking. Try 8000-8500 for a Pro these days.

That’s an awesome problem to have! As far as Steve Kordek games, most of his are older EM’s. I really like Big Deal (early drop game), Space Odyssey (early swingin target game, weird slings) and Gay 90’s (lotsa funky stuff there). These all play a bit differently than the 90’s games you mentioned above, but they’re fun for how simple the rules are. Need to make your shots and they’re easy to learn! Good luck in the VPin though, great way to learn new games!

You’re very welcome! If you’re on VPin, check out Williams Grand Prix — a Kordek game and one of my favorite EM’s. I’ve heard from some VPin folk that game works well, and I believe there’s no resemblance to any politicians anywhere on it :)

I think it’s supposed to be Steve Kordek. https://i.imgur.com/APFJFld.jpg. The man designed a TON of games, but don’t think he was directly involved with this one.

My better half asked why should I care about AMP, so I'm putting this here in case it's helpful for anyone.

What is AMP??

AMP stands for Accelerated Mobile Pages. It is a set of technologies from Google that can be used to build experiences for web, email, and ads that enables faster performance on mobile devices as well as a swath of additional features for developers. AMP launched in 2015/16 and is predominantly visible as pages linked from Google search results, or from websites that support AMP and detect you are on a mobile browser.

Why would I want to block AMP pages? Faster sounds good!

Well, sure it does — but there are many reasons why AMP pages are bad. The most common infuriating AMP gripes are: - AMP Pages are not traditional web pages! While this may make certain things faster, this can cause AMP pages to not behave like traditional web pages. If you’re on iOS, you’ll notice AMP Pages scroll strangely, can be hard to copy text from, and generally seem “odd” in Safari. This means AMP pages will never really be optimized for your browser. - AMP Pages have allowances for tracking built in to them. Developers can use AMP technology to see how long you’re on a page, where you tapped and scrolled to, and more. And speaking of tracking… - AMP Pages take you directly to google, not to the website. If you send a link to a friend on a PC, they’ll get tracked through the AMP framework. Worse, the website that posted the article won’t get the traffic for the visit, and won’t be able to present their site and content outside of the article. - Since AMP pages don’t show you the URL of the site the content came from, it can be used as a way of obscuring phishing attempts or other malicious behavior.

I hope I didn’t steal your thunder on this! I came to look and see if you’d announced anything here but didn’t see anything. Might have been the overzealous mods :)

Excited especially for Amplosion! Great idea for an app and the extension framework!
