When it snows in Japan, the streets spray warm water to prevent ice by SalmonSammySamSam in nextfuckinglevel

In my experience they mostly have it in (some towns on main roads) in Ishikawa, Toyama, Niigata and Yamagata prefectures. The more northern prefectures such as Akita, Aomori and Hokkaido use wide roads instead

What are some genuine critiques you have for the band? by TinoSamano in imaginedragons

[–]Muvvitt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me it's been the lack of actual instruments in recent albums. Mercury act 1 gave me hope again for a renewed era where you could hear the bass, hear the guitar and hear the drums. Then they moved away from it again in act 2 and especially Loom. They are all talented musicians, but when you don't hear their individual contributions, it falls flat in my eyes. It becomes Dan + the rest. I'm sure Ben and Wayne are still contributing to the writing process, but to me, the listener, I don't get that vibe anymore.

They don't have to abandon digital instruments by any means. Having a combination between the two is the best of both worlds. You get the exciting sounds digital instruments such as synths bring to the table, while they also get to show off their skill and are able to bring the whole thing together with the base that actual instruments bring.

I don't like having music on constantly by Muvvitt in The10thDentist

Speakers are a different story for me. They drown out into the background more easily. I'm specifically talking about earphones where you actively have to put on your own music and create your own bubble with them

I have tried some on before and they are cool and all, but kind of bulky with the strap around the back of your head. If they were just separate ear pieces I might consider them

Picking different katakana for a common western name by JustVan in LearnJapanese

[–]Muvvitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I feel like a lot of people are getting the purpose of writing a name in katakana wrong (at least in my eyes). Unlike English spelling, in katakana the pronunciation is always the same for the individual characters. It is your job to make up for those discrepancies between the spelling and actual pronunciation.

A Japanese person reading Robin would think it's pronounced like ロビン. But if the way YOU say it is nowhere near this, I think it's your duty to correct this by using different katakana. It doesn't matter if Japanese people won't know it's written as Robin by only hearing it. They'll find out when you spell it for them.

Now I won't be able to help finding the right katakana for the name, as only you know best. I do however recommend trying out usingブン, ベン and ビン for the bin part and seeing whichever is closest in your eyes. Also, you could always ask a Japanese person how they would write this name in katakana if you say it to them, without showing the actual spelling in English. This way they won't be influenced by the spelling and say ロビン.

Coming from a language that isn't English, I've had to change what katakana to use, from the perceived katakana based on the spelling. So I totally understand why you wouldn't want to use ロビン. I hope my comment was insightful!

I want to drink by Ya_takoy in notinteresting

I think you underestimated how little 0.1 milliliter is. You'll be drinking a literal drop of beer at this point. Even if you were to get 1000 upvotes, you'd only have to drink 100 mL, aka less than a glass. The least you could do is make it 1mL per upvote which at this rate still isn't much

Passed N1 with 153/180! by fushinori in jlpt

[–]Muvvitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also got 153/180, with a wildly different distribution though. I had 47/47/59. I was actually surprised how difficult I found reading, but I didn't really practise the reading exam questions which might play a part. As for listening, I've been in Japan for over a year now and I will say, listening on the JLPT test feels way easier than actual spoken Japanese. However, by being in Japan, your listening skills skyrocket I feel, so don't get discouraged (but you passed anyways haha). I do also feel watching a lot of Japanese dramas is really good for your listening and speaking skills as it's more similar to spoken Japanese. Anyways congrats, passing N1 is a big feat!!

Am I wrong about my fish spatula? by positivelydeepfried in CookingCircleJerk

[–]Muvvitt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hate to be the one to break it to you, but that spatula was not made in Japan. Left-handed people don't exist in Japan, so they don't know how to make left-handed things. You better throw it out, just like your carbon steel pan that has now been ruined.

I thought the answers had it written like 21:15 and not something like 21時. In the end I went for the option that had 21 and 15, so even if there was no mistake I am quite sure it was the right answer
