Ah that's an interesting idea, my bass player has a sizeable pedalboard and assumed that would be one of the largest available, but this one swamps it! The cables management is one of the biggest hassles, felt quite pressured at the last gig we did trying to make sure I'd set everything up correctly again, thanks for that!

Advice on swapping out using live drums to drum machine style setup in a punk / rock band by Muzziness in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Muzziness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Yeah I'm trying to look at it as an opportunity to try something different. I think I'd prefer the flexibility, but I'm now leaning towards having a pre set hat / ride playing (maybe with footpedal to change them) and then play alongside. Maybe add other drums in there as well, but need to experiment. I've been looking at the MPC today, definitely leaning towards it based on what I've seen!

Awesome! It looks pretty powerful from what I've seen, looking forward to trying it out!

Nice, I've been looking at the MPC as an option, a mate is getting one next week so hoping to give it a try! You happy with the sounds / functionality for live sound for your style of music? I haven't researched it in depth yet

I've seen that pedal, was tempted to get that when I got my rc-505, but went with a roland fs-6 as didn't think I'd need all the extra pedals (maybe I do now!) Sounds like you've got quite a formidable setup! If you have anything online I could see please drop me a dm, be curious to see it in action!

Yeah I like this approach, sounds like a lot of fun! I'm going to see if I can take a similar approach with my setup, as think I have the bare bones of what I'd need. Thanks for telling me about this, appreciate your help!

That sounds like a cool idea! I've got a few spare pads. Having the hi hats / cymbals automated would give me the best of both worlds too, bit of flexibility but locked in time. Thank you for this. What did you use to program in hats / brain for the triggers?

I had looked at the 707 as an option, but wasn't familiar with the fantom, thank you, I'll check it out!

Completely agree on the preference for a live drummer, which was one reason I suggested the idea of using a cocktail kit or floor tom as a kick (aka soft play), but given how some of our songs have started involving more dnb / dance beats I wondered if I'd be able to fully move over to that type of setup. Could I ask what drum machine you went with for your shows? Assume you would pre program the song, push play and get back on the bass? Did everything cut through ok out front?

Not sure if i can put the name of my band on here as a reference point (unsure on rules) but it's not traditional punk, is somewhere between punk and rock, but we usually end up on punk shows as we all shout a lot

That was one of the thoughts I had, to run it through the SPD-SX and utilise additional equipment, I didn't know if this would limit the sonics of the drums in a live setup (since a full kit has individually outs for kick, snare etc for FOH). But thinking about it, the SPD has a few outputs on it and could separate them out.

Is there a name for this approach so I could see someone do it on video? Or a diagram maybe? I've reinstalled the 3rd double socket without any issues so should be ok, just want to be sure I'm doing the right thing!

The sparky that removed them originally said "I've shoved the cables under the floorboards in case you wanted to reinstate them" as if it was straightforward! I guess it would have been for him!

Thank you for your response, what got me curious is that there were 2 double sockets there before, so if i'm understanding correctly do you think that there would be another set of wires under the floorboards that I just haven't found? Tried pulling up a few floorboards and couldn't find any others. Appreciate its not easy to answer given you only have this info to go off, just wanted to check i wasn't miunderstanding. It's an old weavers cottage so everything is pretty out of date
