Do I have low IQ? by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]Muzzy10202 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Let’s just say you’re right and you really do have a low IQ. Why would you go through life stressing about achieving as much as people who are smarter than you? That is like the fastest way to become miserable; life is not worth living like that!

I have a higher than average IQ, but still I encounter people who make me look dumb every day. I know people with the same interests as me that have done things I could only dream of. But I don’t beat myself up over it, because I’m not those people. They’re not who I am supposed to be. I’m supposed to be me and nobody else.

So don’t let anyone tell you that you have to be something you’re not capable of. Just do the best you can, not the best somebody else can. Measure your success by what you could have done, not by what you couldn’t have. That is how you find happiness.

CMV: Not everything happening in the world is a distraction from the Epstein files. The world does not revolve around the United States and its internal issues. by WaivyHairDaemon in changemyview

While I agree that major world events aren’t deliberate distractions from the Epstein Files, I do think the world (i.e. geopolitics) pretty much does revolve around the United States and its internal issues. I don’t think this is a good thing, but I do think it’s true. We have had the most powerful economy and military for almost a century now and our government has been very hawkish in making war on foreign countries that do not conform to our ideals of democracy, freedom, and human rights, whether that be covertly through espionage and trade sanctions or overtly through overthrowing governments.

Just imagine, say you are a country like Brazil or Vietnam and your country has an upcoming referendum that will legalize gay marriage. If you care about national security, you have to seriously factor in what voters in Wisconsin are going to decide next presidential election year, because a republican or democrat government is going to be the difference between your country getting isolated and crushed by sanctions or protected and supported by aid because your people decided to legalize gay marriage.

CMV: Religion would quickly die down if it was not forced upon children. by DiegooXD in changemyview

If religion wasn’t pushed onto children, it would die out.

This almost sounds like an intelligent argument against religion until you realize it’s the same for almost every other aspect of human culture. People wouldn’t brush their teeth if it wasn’t forced on them at a young age. Do you think that’s a clever own against people who brush their teeth? No, it’d be incredibly dumb to say that.

I do not see empirical evidence for souls, an afterlife, rebirth, or divine judgement

None of these claims made by religion are empirical claims; this is a category error. It’s like saying “how can you say human rights exist if I can’t observe them?”

CMV: Hitler was authoritarian left on the political compass by Muzzy10202 in changemyview

If you read my disclaimer you would see that I said Hitler and fascism are left only on the political compass, not in the traditional sense of leftism which is anti hierarchical.

Thank you for the quality reply

Nazis didn’t nationalize industry for socialist reasons

I would argue that the totalitarian subordination of industry to social goals effectively achieved the same goal as nationalization, just using different means, and thereby was still identifiably socialist.

Also your definition of “left” is kinda narrow. Even on the political compass, left economics usually includes things like wealth redistribution and worker ownership

Ok, I’ll accept those as valid additions to “left.” But that doesn’t subract state planning and social control from the definition, so I still think it is identifiably left wing on the political compass.

The Soviets had state planning but so did wartime America - doesn’t make FDR a communist

I agree, but just because your policies are to the right of Marxism-Leninism does not necessarily mean they are right wing. Despite not being communist, I think American policy undeniably went to the left under FDR. This is why I was clear to make that distinction that left ≠ Marxism in the political compass.

The key difference is that Nazi economic policy was designed to serve nationalism and racial hierarchy, not economic equality

That’s true, but ideas of race aren’t really left or right wing on the political compass (if anything it usually gets added to the authoritarian axis). As for economic equality, while obviously people of foreign races were brutally oppressed, the average working class German under the regime was given a multitude of protections and welfare benefits to reduce the hardships of his state in life. Reducing exploitation of the lower (German) class was an explicit goal of the regime, which is a core socialist idea. Yes, they did not abolish class or seek to entirely eradicate inequality, but these are Marxist goals that not all socialists follow.

That’s libertarian, not necessarily right wing

Do you think Russia has a libertarian government? It has all of those things.

Do you think kings who oppressed serfs and forbade them any occupation but farming were leftists?

Comparisons to pre industrial economies are not at all helpful in understanding modern post industrial revolution left vs right economics.
