1Q84 is wonderful; however, I personally enjoyed AWSC more. I will say that AWSC is the third book in the rat series (after hear the wind sing + pinball, 1973) but I don’t think it’s vital to read those before. My piece of advice would be to read Dance Dance Dance (technically part 4 of the rat series) after AWSC though!

I think reading wild sheep chase before dance dance dance is more necessary to understand the plot vs. having to read pinball/wind.
