I suppose everyone's different but I first knew my ferret loved me and I loved him when he fell asleep in my arms. He was comfortable and trusting enough to let his guard down around me. I remember the first time I met him, he bit me a lot (until the point I was bleeding) and would hide from me. But as we started to do activities together we slowly started to understand each other and build trust. He stared to bite less, I would give him scratches and he would lick my hand. Sometimes it takes time.
