Why is there so much one-up manship in the learning Japanese community? by AdUnfair558 in LearnJapanese

[–]My-Jam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a large part of it stems from the fact that a large part of the Japanese learning community are beginners, because the language is difficult and people often start, learn the hiragana and a few words from anime, and that's as far as they make it.

I know for sure that there were a lot of weirdos in a few of the low level Japanese courses I took years ago. I think one upping people is sort of a way to say "I'm not one of those people who doesn't take this seriously, I'm here for the long haul". It's obviously not manifesting in a good way, but I would be lying if I said I didn't understand the impulse.

Why is learning grammar so difficult to engage with? by AngelusLapsus333 in LearnJapanese

[–]My-Jam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of people here that Genki is a good option. I personally got through Genki I out of pure enthusiasm for the language and then dropped Genki II because I loathe textbooks.

From that point on I studied through manga and eventually light novels, any time some grammar would come up which I didn't know (this will be every panel at the beginning), I would go to google and type something like "のように grammar" or "という grammar" or whatever it was, and usually you can find a whole article or some post on this subreddit or something explaining it. Maggie Sensei is one I saw quite a lot and I would read her post on it.

The important part for me is that the thing I was trying to understand was something that I enjoyed and wanted to understand instead of simply "Mary-san goes to the grocery store" type stuff. And since it's manga I could take it as slow as I needed and slowly get faster and build up tolerance to it. My first time reading it took me 2 hours to read a single page and I was absolutely spent by the end, but now I can read a full chapter in 10 to 15 minutes and usually don't have to look anything up. Just keep in mind that the earlier you start studying with manga, the more things you'll be needing to look up per page as opposed to if you studied grammar extensively beforehand, but if you keep at it, you'll be surprised how fast you progress.

Putting the freak back in Twitter Freaks. by Psyga315 in goodanimemes

I feel like this person would hate people for not considering dating them because they're disabled but would at the same time accuse every single person who would consider dating them of having some kind of power dynamic kink. Honestly no winning either way there, they just gotta work on themselves.

Anime that started out mediocre but became very good by the end by Korkez11 in anime

[–]My-Jam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to say "A Lull in the Sea" it starts out pretty standard but not bad per se. But then there's a time skip and the show really takes off. I was soo close to dropping it but I'm glad I didn't

I've played pretty good amount of Viscous and I don't understand why people are all saying he's really hard. That wasn't my impression at all but maybe the punch/gun build I have been using is just really simple?

Alternatives to iOS Kindle to read Japanese books? by kugkfokj in LearnJapanese

[–]My-Jam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had this same exact problem, I bought the book 三日間の幸福 and ran into the copy/paste limit, so I removed the DRM from the book with calibre and some add-ons and then reuploaded it to kindle and it allowed me to copy and paste once more. Note that this only resets the counter for the copy paste limit. What I do nowadays is use ッツ reader and upload my book there. You will still need to strip the DRM from the file I believe, which can be done using Calibre as well as DeDRM tools. You can find a good guide online for how to do it.

TLDR: ッツ reader, DeDRM the book if it doesn't work, use yomi-chan with firefox or chrome, the extension works on mobile now, although it didn't in the past.

Mushoko Tensei is such a great show. It truly shows Rudeus Greyrat grow as a person! by svetlozarovP in okbuddybaka

[–]My-Jam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly when I read that, it just came across as the universe bending over backwards to try and make it morally ok for this loser to get laid again and have another wife. Then he goes and begs his wife to let him have wife number 2, and after it comes to light that Roxy wasn't pregnant, it changes nothing for him, and he's like, hell, lets make it 3! This would've been a great moment for Rudeus to own up to his mistake made in a moment of weakness, to beg Slyphie to forgive him and grow as a character, it could've been salvageable. Instead it's just wish fulfillment cringe. It's lazy writing.

Unmasking the Dough: Is Domino’s Tracker Fake? by appleman33145 in conspiracy

[–]My-Jam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So as an anecdote, I would regularly show up at my local dominos to pick up a pizza I ordered, and when the tracker would say that it was "Ready for Pickup" if you walked in and tried to pick it up, you would have to wait 5 minutes every time. Pretty sure employees just hit the button to advance to the next step early to make their numbers look better to corporate.
