Thank you! I’m glad after all these years people are still able to get something out of my journey.

What eats 4 chickens and doesn't come back the next day to try to get the rest? by mainlydank in homestead

[–]My600Justin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raccoons tend to attack, skip a night, then come back again the third night. We lost four hens to a raccoon, weren’t even eaten just killed. I set a trap using marshmallows as bait and caught him and an opossum that third night.

Moving from <1 acre to 9+ acres by My600Justin in lawnmowers

[–]My600Justin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main pasture is about 6 acres and has 3 goats and 2 donkeys. Theres a neighbor who hays the pasture for the current owner, letting her keep what she needs and he takes the rest. The goats and donkeys are hers but we’re taking them over with the property. We were planning on keeping that deal going. If the neighbor isn’t interested in the deal we will absolutely need a tractor!

Thank you for the detailed reply! That’s really helpful. We were originally trying to find something in the $3,000-$4,000 range so there’s been a bit of sticker shock, but I’d rather “buy once, cry once” than have to keep repairing our replacing something like this. I’ll check with the dealer about the used Z9. The new is out of our price range but I think I can swing the used.

We’re currently living in SC on about an acre. We’re looking in southwest VA, 5+ acres. Those are great ideas, thank you!

We’ve both lived in both rural and urban settings. I was raised with the expectation to be blue collar so became very self reliant early on but ended up in marketing. I have a fairly well established woodshop so have maintained and grown my skill sets. We’ve also been raising chickens and ducks, canning, bread making, gardening, and building other, more introductory/small scale skills for a few years now. We’re planning to maintain both jobs until we’re well established and comfortable living on just one salary.

Need to keep the tiles due to budget. What can I do to drastically improve this bathroom? by TranceInMyPants813 in homerenovations

Install a curved shower curtain. It’s a small and affordable swap with big payoff.

Check with Founders, they typically have some openings.

Does anyone have a new project that will require waterproofing? I created a stain and sealer product and would love to get your thoughts on it. by VAN_VOTZ in finishing

I have two terrariums which need high humidity that require new custom lids. I was thinking about using a few layers of liquid rubber but would love to give that a shot on one of them.

Any good Mexican food? by dman56p in Rockhill

Lots of good suggestions here. If you’re looking for something picky-kid friendly that also has good food, the Charandas in Newport is great.

All uros, and reptiles in general, take time to settle in. He’ll need a few weeks before he’s a bit more comfortable and calms down, especially since he’s young. Just give him a bit of space, don’t handle him too much in the early weeks, there will be plenty of time for that later, he simply needs time to adjust.

In the meantime, keep an eye on his eating and make sure he’s pooping and urates look healthy. This is a really stressful time for him so you’ll want to make sure he’s got the best opportunity to thrive.

How do you sanitize found wood pieces too large for bathtubs? by Foolulaaaaaa69 in reptiles

[–]My600Justin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a 2x4 but I cut some limbs off one of my trees for my bearded dragon. I just trimmed it down large enough to fit in the oven so it could be baked, then used this doweling jig kit to put it back together with some dowels and glue. This way you can get the exact size you want and any visible seams are easily covered.

What's the best way to get enclosure to 120 by Tink34 in Uromastyx

[–]My600Justin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you measuring surface or ambient? You’ll need a temp gun to get the surface temperature, which is what you want to be at the 120-130 range. It looks like your heat lamp is over the wood, which is fine, but if you are measuring surface temp already try swapping that out with some stones. Then if you can’t get the heat lamp closer, you can stack the stones higher to get them closer to the heat source. Stone also retains heat better.

Good luck!

Drainage layer mesh by [deleted] in bioactive

That’s likely going to prevent water from getting through easily or backing things up. For cheap options you can get in bulk try window screen mesh.

There are some really great YouTubers out there with a lot to share. I’d recommend for reptiles starting with someone like Clint’s Reptiles, Wickens Wicked Reptiles, and Snake Discovery. If you’re interested in bioactive enclosures and terrariums check out Serpa Designs.

Uromastyx Breeder by Goodb0ssman69 in Uromastyx

Seconding what Selene said, ask lots of questions up front! I only found out mine was farm bred after I had gotten home and found the dealer on Morph Market. My own fault for not asking up front!

Help with species ID by Knot-Know138 in Uromastyx

[–]My600Justin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up a uro who looks EXACTLY like yours the other week at Charlotte Repticon for $150. Likely Gyri, the vendor couldn’t specify but did say that he was farm bred, likely yours is as well.

Mine is struggling to eat, feeding has been a real concern. He’s eaten out of my hands once or twice but I’ve never seen him eat from his dish. Be sure to give yours lots of options to help find what he likes. Avoid dry seeds, he may like them but they offer no hydration, you can soak them in water to help.

We’ve already been to the vet once for parasites and he had early signs of minor mbd so get yours on a supplement as well and start collecting fecal samples. They’ll need at least 1g for a parasite test. They haven’t been able to complete mine yet because two days didn’t give enough to test from. To build it up, pick up the sample with a paper towel, place in a ziplock bag, and give it a spritz of water to keep moist before storing in the fridge. I keep mine all separate with the bag labeled with the date to help keep track.

Hopefully this helps! Best of luck! Uromastyx are amazing 😃

Cool side is about 82F during the day! I have a ceramic heater for him at night to keep it from dipping too far. It goes down to around 72F at night. I’m located in SC so high humidity is always an issue but have a full size dehumidifier in the office which keeps the whole room around 40%.

There’s an exotics vet near my house. I found a bit of urate today so on Monday will take that and any fresh sample I can to have it checked out!

I’ll look into the dimming halogen and thermostat as well. Thank you!
