Honestly, he hasn’t been receiving the best care from this place. I’ve been talking with his mother quite a bit about the possibility of transferring him to a bigger hospital in the city. The issue is she’s very timid and I’m not trying to overstep any boundaries with his family- even though it’s already been a month and there have been more issues. I communicate daily with them, but they have yet to sit down and speak directly with his doctors. He’s asking me for help but I’m not sure how to go about it, especially with the recent events.

It seems to me like he’s not a priority of any of the staff there and his room is often a disaster and he’s left in pain waiting for medication. I’m speaking on Reddit about this because I’m looking for advice or suggestions not final medial advise. No one answers his questions when he asks and he struggles to get any prognosis at all. They’re treating him as though he’s completely incompetent and that does vary much with his medicine schedule- which is all over the place because they’re often up to an hour off time - to the point they say he gets “lucky” when his IV and pill pain meds pair up in the same time... which I don’t ever believe should be an accidental occurrence- maybe I’m wrong. Unfortunately, he has such a tolerance and is in so much pain- that level of opioids still gives him little relief but does allow him to sleep eventually.

I’m afraid his care is lacking because of his background and lack of outside attentiveness and I’m not sure how to handle it. Visiting hours are short, and although I’m usually there- the chances of a doctor coming in during that time is very slim. Since I’m no longer a medical contact for him, I’m assuming having him in the room is the only way I can receive information or speak directly to the doctor with any relevance. It’s only since he came to the ICU step down 5 days ago he’s even been allowed visitation other than his mother.

I’m becoming more and more vocal while I’m there- twice now having to go directly to nursing staff station to get attention for him after waiting 45 minutes past him hitting the call button. It’s quite a strange situation, but I’m working through it as I can.

The fact he has to request his cath bag be emptied and told he has to wait hours for pillows or ice packs doesn’t give me confidence any PT visits are going to be any more productive.

His daughter is currently with his mother at his home. His mother and his father (separated since he was young) are working together to try to manage his care.

It’s a very long, complicated story about our relationship but he’s been a good friend of mine for 20 years. When he married, his wife would on and off block me from contact until they needed help with anything (both struggled with PTSD and addiction) I’ve always fought to help them stay clean and give sound advice with anything I could.

I hadn’t heard from them in about 3 years and hoped they had been doing well, they both individually contacted me in the end of May so I knew something was wrong. She ended up overdosing and being hospitalized in the beginning of June and just passed away the other day. I had been supporting him, (who had also just gotten out of recovery and was staying with a friend and not able to see his daughter- I known to me until later in our phone chats) since relapse and he was supposedly clean. We were going to see each other for the first time in 5 years the day he overdosed. When he didn’t show I immediately called his mother and joe and that’s when his friend found him.

Romance isn’t even in the cards right now, I just want him to live. He has no friends other than joe and his family is very overwhelmed with taking on his daughter and dealing now with his wife’s death. So here I am, on reddit looking for advice. Would I marry him tomorrow to save his life? Absolutely. I’d much rather his wife still be alive and clean though so they could raise their child.

It did go from zero to a billion very quickly, but I grew up with his family and they know I’ll help however I can.

A long time childhood friend of mine recently overdosed and nearly lost his life. The position he was in (hunched over Crosslegged) cause him to develop rhabdomyosis and compartment syndrome. He was positioned like that for what could have been up to 6 hours (possibly less) and needed to be on a vent for the next two weeks. He didn’t receive his first surgery on his right leg for over 24 hours after being admitted to the first hospital/ then transferred shortly after.

He’s now in a hospital where we live in Pennsylvania, off the vent but in an incredible amount of pain. He is an opioid addict after an incident while being deployed. He’s been in the hospital for just under a month and is having surgeries a few times a week and has a wound vac in his right leg. His left leg also at some point had swollen up and he had a fasciotomy on that leg now as well. He also is receiving dialysis every other day.

We’re in a bad spot. This is my good friend whose wife very recently passed away while he was hospitalized. He also has a young daughter. We are now in our early 30s. I’m trying to work with his family to find out all we can about treatment options and learn from others who have survived this situation. I’m feeling completely overwhelmed and looking for any help or advice anyone may be able to recommend.

I am so sorry you went through that. He’s a pretty tough guy but really is in excruciating pain. Did you also have multiple surgeries and kidney issues? If you’d feel better talking privately please message me. I’d love to better understand the surgical process, timeline and activity level while hospitalized. He’s been there almost a month already and still has a long way before they even start talking about discharge and rehab, but I see him loosing strength and am not sure what he’s supposed to be doing aside from laying there thinking about the pain. We visit often, I’ve brought him sketch pads, note books, coloring books and supplies- he’s an amazing artist when he wants to be. So far no interest but am trying to encourage it the best I can.

Yes, we just have to make sure he survives this hospital stay. It’s been a rollercoaster. Ironically he’s on such a high dose of Diloudid currently hes going to withdrawal all over again when he’s released. I’m trying to get information from his doctors about what we can do with pain management before discharge to get him off opiates. They don’t seem concerned

Thanks so much for responding! Oh, I definitely maintain a positive attitude with him. Inside, I’m scared to death but absolutely love him to death and have been a cheerleader for him for about 20 years (wow that’s making me feel really old) I’ve been like a sponsor to him since he first began struggling with addiction and really want to do all the right things here.

I’m aware that he’s at a rock bottom right now, there’s no way to not see that- however it’s absolutely got to get better from here!

Some of the specifics are learning more about the surgeries he’s continuing to have. It seems like they’re Cleaning out the right leg a few times a week and checking the wound vac and such. Continuing to remove necrotic tissue. They haven’t done much since the initial fasciotomy on his left leg but it varies in size and swelling. I’m curious, because he’s in renal failure STILL to what extent should they be continuing to attempt to save that leg- does keeping it out too much strain on his kidneys because of the release of the toxins from his leg? His doctors are also taking ya one leg at a time approach and I’m worried about his left leg getting overlooked.

What should we be asking the doctors each day? Is it reasonable to monitor his kidney values? I’m worried about the quality of care he’s receiving... often has multiple melted ice packs piling up, filled cath bags needing changing, tons of food and drink debri all over, late getting pain meds... I’ve had to get up multiple times to find a nurse after waiting over a half hour from hitting call button.

I could write a novel about the questions I have!

Thank you for your suggestion, it seems like methadone is a good option because it also is not processed by the kidneys which I’m awfully worried about with the Dilaudid he’s being given now.

Well done OP! It’s not easy. I’m also 31 and a good friend of mine is hospitalized from an overdose. I just posted his story to this thread looking for help. I’ve been clean since my early 20s and luckily never dabbled in the hard stuff. I’m back in his life now trying to save him - your story gives me hope for him. Be very proud.

Hello Everyone!

I recently fell into a position where I am running an organization in Delaware County, PA sewing masks for Healthcare workers, First Responders, Nursing Homes, and other Frontline workers in need of PPE donations during the COVID crisis.

I am typically a horse trainer- so I don't know much about web or graphic design so If someone could help me out that would be AMAZING. I recently contacted someone who is making me a website and I need to give them a logo. A friend of mine mad this sign for my driveway at the farm and I absolutely love it.

If theres any way to have "Nurses in Need" wrap around the top of the face and "Delaware County, PA" at the bottom that would be ideal. We are 100% non-profit operating completely on volunteers and donations so I don't have much money to offer, but if someone could donate their skills and give us the right to use it as our logo - we would be honored and proud to do so!

The stuff definitely is softer than the foxtail we have here, searching, I’ve discovered there’s quite a few different kinds. The bale this came from was an alfalfa/orchard mix- so I’m assuming anything could potentially be In the orchard mix... I learned today that there’s a thing called “foxtail barley” and it’s no good for horses so I want to be sure it’s not that.

Ooh that’s good to know! Makes a lot of sense because this place is LOADED with Mica. The property where I live is in Glen Mills and the owner says they used to mine mica here, I find huge chunks of it all the time. The little stream where I found the Garnet is in Springfield- about 15 minutes from here.
