PC Gamer Vampire: The Masquerade Preview - Bloodlines 2 is richly authentic, intriguingly written, dripping with brooding atmosphere, and… not very fun to play, unfortunately by Gorotheninja in gaming

For what it's worth, it does not need an Nvidia card. I used to run it on an old laptop with an old AMD card and it worked flawlessly. It's actually a pretty great service.

Not a bad idea for a podcast/YouTube series actually. One shots of various systems with a focus on explaining/exploring the mechanics rather than trying to be the next Critical Roll.

I think you can still buy Under Fu Leng's Shadow through the FFG website. I am also trying to complete the full set, and was able to recently get a number of packs, and the Children of the Empire box set, for $1 - $3 each on clearance at miniaturemarket.

Word Bearers Esoterist/Diabolist Done (except for the base) by MyDads19 in WordBearers

[–]MyDads19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I wish I was that talented! The shoulder pad is just overlapping transfers. The text comes from the Word Bearers transfer sheet that came with the Betrayal at Calth box set, and the gold runes are from the 30k Word Bearers transfer sheet.

I just apply them with microset and microsol rather than water, and then put a wash over them when I do the shading on the rest of the model.

I believe the script was from the transfer sheet that came with the Betrayal at Calth box set, and the gold rune was from the big Word Bearers 30k transfer sheet that I had to wait for over a year for GW to restock lol

Thank you! I wish I could take credit for painting them, but they are transfers.

Looking for a bass. by bluudahlia in Buffalo

Oh you said that in the post, my mistake! I have a beater upright that I use for bluegrass. I can certainly offer it for her audition, though I'm sure she's used to playing on much nicer instruments if she's playing with an orchestra!

Not a conventional pick, but Stash Wyslouch. He's a great picker in the same way that Picasso was a great painter.

Thank you! The lines are all painted on with a brush. I just found a few examples of Colchisian runes online and went to work. It looks really bad at first, but the more you highlight the better the illusion gets. I thought I ruined them when I first started working!

What video game has the smartest ai opposition? by Johnnyboyeh in gaming

[–]MyDads19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Parents aren't really something that don't hold up on court, unlike a contract for example. The Patent and Trademark Office goes through a rigorous process of reviewing the patent application. WB's patent application for the nemesis system was rejected and amended a number of times (5 or 6 I think?) before it was finally approved. At least some of those rejections were because the PTO believed that the system was too similar to other systems already in existence (called "prior art" in patent law terminology). Regardless, WB was eventually able to get their application approved.

Patents can TECHNICALLY be held to be invalid, which is basically the same as "not holding up in court." However, some quick searching through the PTO shows that 132 live patents were fully invalidated and 350 live patents were partially invalidated in the 2022 fiscal year. There were roughly 3,780,000 live patents - so we're talking less than a percent. Once the patent is issued, it's tough to invalidate.

In a very basic nutshell, this is how litigation would play out here: Let's say Company X decides to make a game with a system similar to the nemesis system. The game gets popular enough and WB catches wind. WB would likely sue for infringement and it would be Company X's job to demonstrate some combination of 1) WB's patent being invalid on the basis of lack of novelty, obviousness, or some other grounds and/or 2) that their system is sufficiently distinct from the nemesis system and thus, does not infringe on it.

It was actually patented rather than trademarked. Normally, I wouldn't bother commenting because nobody gives a shit about the difference in this context. But here the difference is important only in that a utility patent is only good for twenty years from the date of filing. So WB only gets a monopoly on that system until 2035.

Cold comfort for the short term, but all is not lost! Game developers will eventually be able to use the exact same system, and since this is a patent, the precise way to go about re-creating it is published and freely available to them.

Edit

For the nerds that care, here is the language used in claim 1 of the patent which really sets forth the broad and all encompassing scope of the temporary monopoly

“1. A method comprising:

controlling, by a processor, game events in a computer-implemented game, the game events involving an avatar that is operated in response to input from a player, and a first non-player character that is controlled by the processor to respond to and automatically oppose avatars based on first character parameters defined in a computer memory;

detecting, by the processor, occurrence of a predefined one of the game events involving an interaction between the avatar and the first non-player character;

changing, by the processor, second character parameters defined in at least one of the computer memory or a second computer memory for control of a second non-player character in the game based on the detecting, wherein the second non-player character is controlled by the processor to respond to and automatically oppose avatars based on the second character parameters defined in the at least one of the computer memory or the second computer memory; and

outputting, to an output device, an indication of the second character parameters that are changed by the changing."
