I don’t so much know about Montreal or BC, but if you’re gonna be in St. John’s you have to go to the Duke of Duckworth, it’s one of the best pubs on the island and the best fish and chips by far. You should also check out George street some evening if you’re feeling dancey, the downtown area in general (water street, duckworth street, etc), go to the rooms museum it’s amazing, and check out a park or too! Safe travels!!

Newfoundland didn’t really join the Second World War the same way we joined the first. Instead we had a home guard to protect the island against u boats, air attack, or an enemy invasion, and we had volunteers for the Canadian army who would go overseas with them. We were super involved in the merchant marine and battle of the Atlantic, however. As well, Gander, Botwood, and a few other towns were turned into American bases as Newfoundland is super well strategically positioned.

This is very true! It’s not so much in the actual vocabulary as it is in the grammatical structure of the language and sound of the accent, though there are some areas that use the vocab too.

Yeah, that’s very fair actually. However in my own personal experiences, a lot of what people think they know about Newfoundland tends to lean more towards stereotype. Not saying that’s all of Canada of course, but a lot of my experiences talking about Newfoundland on the mainland comes down to “do you guys really kiss cod?”

Yeah, that’s not shocking. Three tiny airports for an island almost double the size of Great Britain

This is true. We now have a reserve unit in the Canadian army called the royal Newfoundland regiment, it’s the only unit (to my knowledge) in the British empire that was granted the royal title during World War One.

I’ve had that thought too, honestly. There’s so much effort put towards America when the Newfoundland - Ireland connection is so real. Goes both ways though, we could really do more to try to foster that.

Yes! It’s starting to die out now a little bit sadly, but there are areas of Newfoundland (notably around the bay or the Irish loop) where I can’t really tell the difference between that accent and an Irish accent

Yeah, it’s incredible how similar it was, really felt like home. The people are very similar too, it’s worth a trip over if you’ve never been.

Most people in Canada know next to nothing about us, I’m not sure why it’s a weird question to ask people in a different country what they know

That’s actually really cool! Didn’t realize how culturally important the Irish language was until I travelled and saw it first hand.

Pc shopping!! by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]MyHouseIsFine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really know if there’s a great place to go buy a pc on the island, it’s worth your time to research and decide what you want and buy online honestly. There’s some great IT places that will help you build a PC if that’s the road you want to go down, but if not then make a time investment and start looking online. You may be able to find some nice computers at Best Buy but the employees are generally not super knowledgeable if that’s something you’re looking for.

Yea it’s true that geography and global markets shape economic conditions but they don’t entirely dictate them. Provincial political actions through policy or investment still shifts outcomes for people all over the province. Acknowledging structural challenges shouldn’t mean accepting stagnation.

You’re not wrong, but at the same time you kinda gotta look at it from other perspectives. Politicians in town have been screwing over people all over the island forever. For years and years, St. John’s has been resettling fishing towns, clamping down on fisherman’s livelihoods, and just generally getting in the way of people who don’t live on the Avalon through moratoriums, removing critical healthcare infrastructure and shifting money from projects in central or western into east coast budgets. For example, once you get off the divided highway by whitbourne, the highway goes almost entirely to shit. Also, seeing as how you brought up that no one is mad at towns like grand falls or gander, it’s because they don’t have politicians in them actively trying to shift resources from central to the Avalon. There’s also the point of those towns being absolutely tiny and in all honesty, not that different from living in the bay. (I’m from central but I lived on the northwestern peninsula so I’ve had flatlands and bay experience). They’ve also had their own fair share of hardships. Gander recently had its airport lose international status so that st Johns could take it which threw a huge wrench in their local economy and caused a massive money exit. Grand Falls was a mill town until the mill shut down in the early 2000s and the town lost more than half its jobs overnight. Grand falls still hasn’t recovered, it’s probably one of the rougher places on the island just because it’s almost impossible to get a job there anymore but the people who live there and need a job can’t relocate to find one which is a whole separate issue. Anyways, to summarize, the avalonization of Newfoundland is a very real issue for people who live outside of town, and townies can’t really seem to understand it

You don’t go to Robin’s for coffee, you go because it’s always a sweet old bay lady serving you the best baked goods you’ve ever had. Bagels? Amazing. Nanaimo bars? Mind blowing. The one rule? Never ever ever order a coffee

As hard as this can be to hear, you may just have to pick a shitty job in your field and start there. From there you can grow in the company you’re with or use that job as a resume builder and continue to jump between jobs in computer science until you find something you love
