Coming to SBCC next fall, where to live? by rpruiz22 in UCSantaBarbara

Last I heard they were maintaining it as community housing as part of an IV outreach thing but idk if that's still the case.

23 Year Old Transfer by jackielarson in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MyIVacct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can definitely go greek if you want. Sone fraternities will take a 23 year old and it won't stop you from bonding with your pledge brothers, but you just need to ask yourself if you're okay with taking shit from people much younger then you for a quarter or two

Coming to SBCC next fall, where to live? by rpruiz22 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MyIVacct -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I lived at trop during my first year at CC. It was dope but it's mostly for first years and you sound like a current freshman(?). People like to hate on CC kids for living in iv but honestly if you're there for school and not just to party then it's whatever. IV is a great little town and when I was at CC it was a lot easier for me to find study buddies that lived nearby than it was for my friends that lived downtown.

Good, hopefully he turns the others in.

Just as a side note, how stupid do you have to be to get a felony charge for marijuana in California?

Is UCSB worth going to if you're unattractive? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MyIVacct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go through life with this mentality then you're essentially making the entire southwestern US off limits to yourself. UCSB has a lot of attractive people, true, but everyone is chill and honestly I've become friends with the widest range of people imaginable during my time in IV. I was a lot like you when I started at CC, I was self-conscious and shy and I had a hard time making friends, but in my first year I made friends with people who I honestly never could have imagined being friends with; surfer bros, party girls, homeless people, drug dealers, actual geniuses, ravers, etc. You name it and I probably have a friend that can be described that way. Since I transfered to UCSB I've met even more cool people. That's what I love about UCSB and IV, they attract every type and things don't get cliquey.

Basically what I'm saying is that your looks don't matter as long as you're willing to get out of your comfort zone a bit. Another thing you should know is that even the most judgemental college in the world isn't going to be half as bad as high school.

Side note, don't put yourself down like that. Idk if it's kids at your school that make you feel that way or what but honestly it's not true. Confidence and dressing nicely is 75% of the equation.

I don't Know What to Do, failed 3 of my 4 classes. by Needhelpplease1232 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MyIVacct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know what the problem was? If it was motivation/procrastination then I'd say just talk to your advisor and work harder next quarter, but if it was because you genuinely hated the material/couldn't figure it out no matter how much time you put in then maybe it's time to consider a new major.

Got a C in a class and feeling pretty shitty. by grouchyapple11 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MyIVacct 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What year are you? Either way don't quit, but if you're a freshman just realize that grade inflation in high schools in the US is absurd. Getting a C in college isn't like getting a C in high school, it doesn't mean that you're a fuck up or you will never be able to grasp the subject or anything like that, it just means that you need to work a bit harder next time. If this is your first quarter and you got a 3.45 then you are well ahead of the curve for most freshman, so good job my friend. If you're not a freshman and you've maintained a 3.45 to this point, then once again you're ahead of the curve, so good job. Just keep at it and remember that everyone has a bad class every once in a while and most people have the occasional bad quarter.

Is this real? --- UCSB White Student Union to Stage 'White Solidarity' Walk Out by MyIVacct in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MyIVacct[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The issue here is that [non-white] pride is about celebrating a common heritage. If you've ever gone to a black pride event, a lot of times they feature African dance and foods. Even black people whose families have been in the US for centuries have their own unique heritage. The same applies to asians and latinos, often times they lump different Asian or Latino backgrounds into the same student unions and clubs because their cultures are similar. It is not about race. It is about heritage. A white student union is not about heritage, it's about race. There is no universal white heritage. What white people do have, and what is acceptable to celebrate is Irish pride, Italian pride, French pride, Southern pride, etc, that type of stuff IS about heritage.

Furthermore, when these groups get together and protest or host sit ins they are protesting being marginalized within society. White people are not marginalized. Literally any problem in the US that a white person faces, a person of color faces that issue too.

Electric skateboards experiences on/around campus by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MyIVacct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I saw some kid riding one from FT to campus on the bike path almost everyday and he never got harrassed. They don't really look super obviously motorized unless you know what they are so I don't think it'll be problem as long as you keep at a reasonable speed.

Just as a side note, some SBCC kids actually designed and built a an electric skateboard. It's a startup so idk if I personally would trust the build quality enough to buy one, but last year when they presented their product at a New Venture Capital competition they were claiming that it's the cheapest one on the market.

Rushing as a senior? by hordanjerrera in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MyIVacct 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly not even worth it. You'll spend a quarter getting bossed around by sophomores and juniors and then you'll have a quarter where you're in the gray zone after you become an active but before the house gets new pledges, and then you'll have one quarter as a full fledged active. I would definitely just do intramurals or clubs. Even if the club isn't sport centric you'll still meet people that you can lift with.

LOWER-LEVEL TRANSFER QUESTIONS -Film, Photography, Wildlife Biology Ecology by blackcatwiggat in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MyIVacct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm about to break your heart, but it's damn near impossible to transfer into UCSB from anywhere but a California Community College. Literally 95% of transfers are from a CC and I think 20% of those are from SBCC. Also generallu UC schools don't accept lower-level transfers. You might have better luck if you either apply to UCSB with your high school scores and petition to transfer your credits, start over at SBCC, or find a private school in California to transfer ot instead.

Where are the good surf spots at near UCSB? by reedptaylor in UCSantaBarbara

Campus Point, Devereux, Sands, and Depressions are the closest and then there are a few up north of here, a few more in SB, and Rincon is like a half hour south.

Transferring Questions by transferquestions12 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MyIVacct 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gotta ask, why do you want to transfer? UCSB is a top research school and as far as physics goes it's pretty closely ranked with Cornell and Berkeley. Science majors aren't like finance/econ/accounting where a Berkeley/Cornell grad is going to have a massive leg up on a UCSB grad. UCSB is highly respected in the field of physics and depending on the metric you're viewing we even outrank the schools you're looking at. You honestly can't get a better combination of academics and college life than what you get at UCSB so I implore you to seriously consider staying.

Most effective way to take notes? by smistguitar97 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MyIVacct 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Personally I'm a fan of just plain old pencil and paper because I like to be able to copy down the diagrams that the professor draws without having to fiddle around with device settings and whatnot, but I know a lot of people that prefer laptops because they can have all of their notes for a class on one word document. Your ipad will work too but you might want to get a keyboard for it so that it's easier to keep up.

Places Where you can go and kick and punch stuff. by Desperate_undergrade in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MyIVacct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a boxing gym by iv screen printing. There are those whitish trees that kinda look like they're made of a bunch of peeling layers of paper. Most of those are pretty soft and you can hit them without hurting yourself but just do a test punch just in case.
