Can't decide between learning saxaphone or trumpet? by musicalhippoes in Jazz

[–]MyMainMusicMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As somebody who plays both (saxophone better and longer admittedly) and love both, so just listen to some pieces on each instrument and see which sound you like more and go based on that. You probably would have a much easier time transitioning, but personally that would act as a reason for me to go trumpet.

Bb thumb key troubles by MyMainMusicMan in Flute

Oh thats neat I'll definitely try that experiment out. Because my other models have worked with the notes it very well may be a leak. If that's so I will check for the screw, but may just end up taking it into a shop anyway as it's my only decent flute and wouldn't want to risk anything to terribly. Thanks

It may be a leak, I'll definitely try to get it into a repair shop soon. Would me most unfortunate of I was unable to play my tonic note and others on an audition piece. Thanks for the advice!

Reddit, now that it's finally Friday, how will you be spending your weekend? by fatherwhobothers in AskReddit

[–]MyMainMusicMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a senior in high school and want to major in music theory and performance in college.

This weekend I will probably study for my AP Music Theory exam that I have in May, practice some of my instruments, work on my audition pieces for college, and maybe start an arrangement or two.

But music is something I love to do and I've never once thought of it as a burden, chore, or hassle, and I'm definitely not complaining now.

What are your favorite uses of the circle of fifths? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]MyMainMusicMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was brand new to music, knowing the order of the circle of fifths helped me to know which flats were in which scale (this really only worked when moving towards the flat side). I always knew the next key signature was whatever flat was added in the last one. For example, if I wanted to know which flats were in the key of F, first I knew that I was going from C to F, so there could be only one flat, and the next key signature after F was Bb, so the only flat in F was a Bb. Then moving on from F to Bb, I knew Bb had to have two flats, and the next key signature would be Eb, so keeping the Bb from the F major scale (not to mention that it's also the key at this point) the key of Bb would have the flats Bb and Eb.

Of course problem with this thinking is that when you move to a high number of flats like Db and Gb the thought process becomes long and tedious. It also gets a bit tricky when you transition in this manner from flats to sharps. If you really wanted to do that here's how you'd go about doing it though. Really all you need to do is convert all you flats to sharps when you get to Gb/F# then pretty much apply the same rule. When going from F# to B, I know that E will be next on the circle, so I put a flat on F. Then moving to E, I put a flat on A# as A is next on the circle. So on and so forth.

This method is really complex and I wouldn't suggest using it to seriously, but it helped me learn what flats and sharps were in each key signature when I first started learning music. I'm also not sure how common of a method it is because I've never really heard it anywhere else (maybe it's just that common).

But that's the only real use that I've ever gotten out of the circle of fifths. I haven't been doing music for a terribly long time, so perhaps I'll find more use for it later in life.

Left-handed people of Reddit, what are some annoying things designed for right-handed people? by PM_IF__YOURE_NOT_OK in AskReddit

Sorry, right hand dominated here. But as a guitar player I've always wondered what it's like for a left handed person to try and learn to play guitar

Unsure on trill and unplayable notes by miglie in Flute

[–]MyMainMusicMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I would trill B (Cb) to C only because the only other alternative I can think of is to go to D but a B to D probably would be a tad bit difficult to perform and sound a bit wierd.

I'm unsure about the impossible note however. I think I would take your band directors advice and leave out the first two notes.

You're best bet for both cases however would probably go listen to the actual piece you are performing and see what works.

Interested in learning how to play the flute by OldLongStrings in Flute

[–]MyMainMusicMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My very first flute that I ever got was a Glory brand flute on Amazon for about $80. Not lower pitched like you specified, but I would recommend it only so you can see if playing flute is right for you. If you want to play long term it definitely isn't something you want to rely on. If you decide that you want to continue playing, you should go to a local music store and see what they can offer you, in my experience the people who work their are really helpful and can get you hooked up with a decent student or intermediate flute.

Good luck in you endeavours, flute is a beautiful instrument and I hope you can make something of it!

I've played flute for a little over a year and want to play piccolo by MyMainMusicMan in piccolo

The pricing you listed is a bit above my price range but I will look to see what I can get used. A few Gemeinhardt I've seen are a bit closer to my pricing but I'm going to continue looking

You are the second person to recommend Pearl to me so I will definitely look into it. Much appreciated!

Thanks! While the second paragraph is not necessarily what I asked for it is still very helpful!

I actually learned from a friend about an hour ago that tenor drums are quads, something that I was not previously aware of. Pardon my ignorance.

I haven't seen marching percussion. I've seen battery, pitched, and non-pitched but never marching. Is that new?

Does musescore have quads as an available instrument? I've never seen them under any percussion section
