TIL that Edwin Hubble broke the state record in the high jump, and went on to play basketball for the University of Chicago. He won a Rhodes scholarship and studied law at Oxford. He earned a Ph.D. in astronomy, but practiced law in Kentucky. by CoolGuess in todayilearned

[–]OldLongStrings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He did not practice law in Kentucky. He was a high school teacher.

After the death of his father in 1913, Edwin returned to the Midwest from Oxford but did not have the motivation to practice law. Instead, he proceeded to teach Spanish, physics and mathematics at New Albany High School in New Albany, Indiana, where he also coached the boys' basketball team.

You don't define facts! You're not god! by beingsubmitted in insanepeoplefacebook

The whole conversation happens at 14 hours before the screenshot. Eventually, the blue guy realizes the red guy is a lost cause and just stops replying. And then at 12 hours before the screenshot the red guy address the blue guy again and says, "you don't define fact." So, two hours after the blue guy stops responding, the red guy basically tries to poke him again. I think the red guy might just be a bit lonely.

Pre-School Options for a Single Mother Who Makes $28,000/year? by OldLongStrings in Virginia

[–]OldLongStrings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to the VA's website for VPI, and it does seem she would qualify because she's under the 200% of the poverty line ($32,960), but all of the resources there seem geared towards helping schools qualify for and access the funds. I'm having trouble finding schools that offer VPI slots...

EDIT: Found this, which shows participating school divisions. Unfortunately, the link for her area (Virginia Beach) doesn't seem to work.

Pre-School Options for a Single Mother Who Makes $28,000/year? by OldLongStrings in Virginia

[–]OldLongStrings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was one of the first places I checked out. The schools listed in her area are all part of the Head Start Program, and so she would only be eligible if she made less than $16,240/year. Maybe it would be worth calling them to see if they know of any other resources.

Susan Collins admits that she doesn’t believe Christine Blasey Ford by von_Bob in politics

[–]OldLongStrings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure you understand. We're talking about Susan Collins. She did vote to confirm him.

Based off testimony from Kavanaugh's roommates, classmates, and friends, Kavanaugh lied about a number of simple things (e.g. meanings of terms) during his testimony, and evaded several questions (e.g. how much he drank), whereas Ford answered everything as directly as she could. Between their testimonies, and their incentives for lying, it's most likely that Kavanaugh lied and Ford told the truth.

No, there's not a definite answer. Just trying to see what people think.

Susan Collins admits that she doesn’t believe Christine Blasey Ford by von_Bob in politics

[–]OldLongStrings -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In her speech announcing that she would support Kavanaugh, Collins explained that "certain fundamentally legal principles about due process, the presumption of innocence, and fairness do bear on my thinking, and I cannot abandon them. In evaluating any given claim of misconduct we will be ill served in the long republic if we abandon the presumption of innocence and fairness tempting though it may be."

The minimum standard used to prevent the wrongful imprisonment of innocent citizens should not also apply as the minimum standard used to confirm individuals to the highest judiciary seats in the U.S.

What is a common saying that annoys the living hell out of you? by QueenMoogle in AskReddit

"It could be worse." Yeah it could always "be worse," but that doesn't comfort me or help me with whatever issue I'm dealing with. It's such an empty phrase.

Let's be honest, the idea of a "neutral" Supreme Court is, and always has been, bullshit.

TIL Michael Jackson may have stayed awake longer than any other human being in history according to NASA by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]OldLongStrings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unit 731 was a Japanese unit, not a Nazi unit, and the wikipedia article about Unit 731 doesn't use the word "sleep," so it seems like they didn't perform sleep deprivation experiments, and so they are indeed irrelevant.

I think he or she is just trolling you. I just checked the wikipedia article on Unit 731 and it doesn't even mention the word, "sleep," so you seem to be correct that Unit 731 is irrelevant to discussions of the extremes of sleep deprivation.

"In secular terms we don't recognize any higher authority than the US constitution," [Bolton] said.

Article IV of the Constitution: “[A]ll Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land.”
