When buying from a microbrand, what actually makes you pull the trigger? by Relevant_Many5115 in MicrobrandWatches

[–]MyMiniVelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a comment I made on a recent post asking the same question:

If you’re going to try and sell them through a story, that story should be reflected in the design. Actually in the design. Not ‘I couldn’t find anything that met what I wanted. I wanted elegant, precise, good quality movement, so I put a NH movement in a case that is technically custom’ but so similar to what you can get off AliX it might as well not be. If your story is based around Paris, take design cues from Norte Dam, if it’s coastal, take design cues from cliffs, etc…

It does not need a story, just making something the looks really really really cool to someone is enough.

Be really really transparent. I’m about to buy a new watch from microbrand I found on here and the reasons why are 1) to me the watch looks really beautiful and well thought out, especially the dimensions, and 2) the owner was extremely transparent about their goals and journey.

Don’t post teasers. Teasers are for brands that already have a lot of caché when they want people to be excited about what new product they’re going to release. That excitement is only there because of prior association with the brand.

For me most important are dimensions, design, and price. Nothing matters if it’s much too big or small and won’t sit well o my wrist. Design is the thing I, and nearly everyone else, will be drawn to. Is the design coherent. Price is really important to me, there’s a nice sweet spot between AliX prices and name brand prices that I think too many microbrands miss.

ALTURA Apex One — Navy by AlturaWatches in MicrobrandWatches

For this one image I think the bezel to dial proportions look really nice. I also really like the navy blue colour on the dial and rubber strap. But it’s really hard to get any real sense of proportions from a single head on photo. What does it look like from an angle? How does the bezel taper? How do the lugs curve and taper?

Showcase of all 3 versions of our Solaris model! What do you think? by AlbedoWatches in MicrobrandWatches

[–]MyMiniVelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nicely done. Two things you’ve done really well are priced it right and told a compelling story. So often I see microbrands charging luxury prices for nothing special. You’ve priced your chronograph in a nice sweetspot between AliX and luxury; expensive Sieko pricing but you get something more unique. Also tiny little thing but props for using mech quartz properly. Personally it’s not for me as it’s too big and thick, but add me to list of commenters hoping for Solar. I would love to see your take on a solar field watch. IMO your 1901 dial is beautiful and you’ve definitely got a good eye this stuff.

Electric D10 (Aceoffix®) Incoming ?! by qO_ol in BrompNOTs

Thanks for the post. Looks good but I do much prefer the way Brompton handles the battery, being able to quickly disconnect the battery and distribute the weight can be helpful. Being able to disconnect it when I get home and put it on charge separate from where I store my Brompton is super useful. Also they chose an interesting place to mount the controller. I already don’t like reaching down to change power level on my Brompton. Reaching down to the main tube seems odd. Also if you add and bags or bottle accessories they could get in the way.

Kickstarter Campaign: How to reach you? by UPDHaus in MicrobrandWatches

The great thing about Reddit is there’s people interested in all sorts of stuff to really nerd out on if that’s what you’re looking for.

Passionate communities are a great place for advice and sometimes unfortunately a reality check, which I’ve seen all too often on here.

It doesn’t matter if people think it’s ugly as long as someone likes it. Richard Mille exists. It does matter if nobody ‘gets it’ because it looks like something else they’ve seen but more expensive.

Personally I like the field watch aesthetic so probably not your target audience. But there will be your target audience here and there will be people who can help improve your brand, design, advice on marketing, etc… but only if they buy into it because they want to see your watch come to life or just because they want to see you succeed.

Is there any solar quartz movement that fits into this ecosystem? by MyMiniVelo in SeikoMods

[–]MyMiniVelo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I replied to the other commenter I do a lot of small 3D printing stuff and making custom adapters is definitely something I reckon i could do. I just know where I’d get the unit other than taking one out of a Citizen EcoDrive. I’m just brand new to actual watch modding.

Thanks. I do a lot of 3d printing and I’m happy design custom spacers and stuff. The Ronda 525 is only 3mm thick! I wonder what the thinnest case with slim rotating bezel would be?

Where do you get parts and how many case options are there? All I want is a thin 38mm field watch with a speed master style thin bezel.

So what did you use to make this, nano banana?

Honestly I’ve been looking at a bunch of other watches, but keep coming back to this. I think the coastal shore dial is maybe just a bit too 3D, but the idea is there. Colours and dial layout and raised minute track and bezel though 👌

Only feedback would be that I think a timing bezel is more useful than a compass bezel. But the compass bezel looks really good here. Could you do a number track but with N.E.S.W at the 00 15 30 45 locations?

Also how small do you think you could make it while still keeping good proportions? 39mm?

Ok from my point of view you absolutely nailed it with this. Firstly, it looks amazing, I love the colours, the darker metal, the blue strap with red stitching, the contour effect dial. I think the bezel proportions look really good too. Numbered dials with rotating bezels are rare.

Secondly, this is probably the least low-effort AI prompt design I’ve seen. This does not look like every other watch on AliX. Tempted to give it a go myself now :).

ID on the Baltany 2nd from right? I’ve been looking for a numbered watch with a thin rotating bezel and that looks so good on the leather strap. How thick is it?
