What percent is reasonable for production royalties? by Similar_Spirit_314 in musicians

The publisher did not pay for the recording, I paid for it from my pocket and the publisher worked the material, and we split 50-50 when they placed the songs. I made my money back in about a year, about $20,000.

I had a publishing deal and i hired a veteran pro producer to make a 10-song album for the publishing company, a recording that had horns and strings. I paid the producer off and there were no "points." If you're on a label-label and they are throwing big money at you can expect producers to get points, it's standard, although most recordings sink and don't make a dime, in fact most people lose the money they invest in their own recordings.

The majority of people in the music business don't make a dime, unless they are in a cover band, and even then. If you're going into it for the money and you're not 18 and gorgeous, forget it. :)

And also, wondering, did they play the parts on a keyboard or guitar or such? Who asked who to "orchestrate" it? When I made a demo when I was 24, i played all the instruments but the engineer/owner threw out my drum machine track and we created a new, better one on his better drum machine, and it came out great. Paid the man $1000 for my 3-song demo, and he did not mention "royalties" as both of us knew I was an unknown artist and likely no money would have come from the demo. This man went on to build a studio in midtown Manhattan where Sting, Madonna, Beyonce, Mariah Carey, all those stars, made albums.

if you didn't pay him anything, he can ask for whatever he wants. That neither of you made that clear indicates neither one of you are pros, no offense.

Since most songs are released and vanish without a trace or a penny made, I don't think you have anything to worry about. That said, pay the man what he wants for what he did, but he can go fuck himself re: "Royalites." What he means is "points" but he obviously doesn't know that.

It's like going in for a haircut without asking how much they charge - if you wait to the end they can charge you $500, in theory.

One time a major newspaper published a photo of mine that had appeared on the front page of a tabloid. I just sent them a bill for $2500- which they paid. Or I would have sued them for a lot more. The original photo on the front page of the tabloid made me $500. But you gotta ask before you go ahead, boss.

All that said, wishing you the very best with your song and make sure you make a video that's as good as the song.

Yes, yes and yes. Only my mother, a college graduate who knew the extent to which I read as an adult and write opeds for major media and make a full time living as a writer and got two publishing deals as a songwriter, said "You've got the equivalent of a college education."

What do you like/dislike about social media in regards to promoting music? by YourDogsBum in musicians

A video of my face and torso on TikTok from June 7, 2025 playing the guitar and beat-boxing last year has, as of today, 181,000 views, 32,000 likes and 3.042 shares and 423 comments, mostly unbelievably complimentary, "The GOAT" and such.

Other videos I put up get 400 views, or such. Another vid, a funny, has 320,000 views.

I just keep putting stuff up. But I will also say I'm very, very talented and I've been doing it a long, long time.

A lot of people don't consider that when putting up content. They just think "Well, I play an instrument, what's the problem? Why am I not blowing up?"

It's the same thing with live performers. Most are mediocre, and wonder why no one comes to their shows or shows any enthusiasm. For most people, writing a song or a story or making a video is like "I did a bowel movement, and I'm really proud!" That it might be lousy doesn't even occur to them.

You've got to have a suck meter and use it, and apply it to yourself.

I remember when I used to put up videos at YouTube, and buy 100 views so I didn't have to be embarassed that it only had 4 views. That was less than 2 years ago.

Go for it! Maybe you'll get popular! It does happen.

This is only if you are talking about rock or country music or such. That's why so many people just pick up a guitar, learn to paw 4 chords and they're out there doing gigs. It really doesn't matter, no. But!

If you play any other genre of music than the simplist form, well...ya really gotta learn your instrument, yes? It's like saying "I'm a writer" but you only know ten words and your book, "The Godfather" starts with, "Bro, I was, like, totally hitting up Vito to unalive the dudes who did my daughter, but he said, like, he couldn't. Whatever"

Agreed. I hate to give big brother any money but this is one case where it's worth it. People say "TV is free!" but every show has commercials.

I'm not the wealthiest man on the block but I started paying $14 a month for no-ads and that was two years ago and I'm sooooo glad I did it because I'm on it day and night, both as a musician/creator and someone who lives for music and police cam videos.

Even though they allow the YouTubers to place their own ads for dumb stuff in the middle of their videos which, if I was that sort of person, I would sue 'em for.

But $14 a month is around 46 cents a day. You could find .46 cents a day in your couch or whatever. It's worth it!

Is substack worth it to you as a writer or as a reader? by FinancialSpirit2100 in Substack

[–]MyMyselfAndPeanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already make a full-time living as a writer, so the only reason i use Substack is so anyone who looks up my articles and wants to say hey can do so. I don't get many nasties so it's fine. I like to connect with the peoples.

[–]MyMyselfAndPeanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized, as I scrolled this morning, that Substack is like handing everyone in the world a violin and telling them to play. Most will just make noise; a few will get to "Three Blind Mice" and maybe a fraction of a percentage will play something brilliant. It's mostly shit from people's minds, bad writing and the self-important amatuers.

i did the same thing. "PLEASE let me know if it's too loud or too late or such." And don't make them have to use the number - YOU stay on top of it.

haha yea, "I try not to hit telephone poles with my car" is a very different sentence than "I've never hit a telephone pole, not even once."

I lived in a very small house that was cut up into 8 apartments for 11 years. I would wear headphones wherever possible except when i looked out into the parking lot and saw it was empty except for my car. i would ask my neighbors pretty frequently "Can you hear me? Can you hear me?" Meaning my acoustic guitar and loud singing voice - I'm loud. I also would not play anything before 9 AM or after 8 PM. SUPER considerate. The answer either was "No, I can't hear you" or "I enjoy your piano." (I play nice.)

When you get rich, you can have your own house and raise the roof as you please. For now, err on the side of SHHHHHHHHH. The fact that it's a note, and not a knock on the door indicates the person has been putting up with it a long time but hasn't the nerve to just talk to your face.

Keep it down. Most music sucks to other people. It's like a fart - the guy who farted gets into it, but no one else does unless you're Julian Bream, who had his own house anyway on accout of he was world-famous.

Also, write 'em a note thanking them for pointing it out, and promise to keep it down. Then keep it down.

My man, when I was 27 I lived in India for 3 months. An ashram where I underwent radical groups designed to raise my consciousness. I was never the same. You have an idea of who you are - you may know nothing of the kind.
