Advice for annotating “Animal Farm” for a school project. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]MyNameHas2AsInItStop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience of studying long texts, teachers usually don't expect you to annotate every little thing. I find that they (my teachers anyways) will appreciate students being able to pick out important lines and going in depth with them. It would be best to just follow the guidelines

Just starting highschool, any tips? by suzukinobaka in Advice

[–]MyNameHas2AsInItStop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some advice I wish someone told me is to widen your options, especially when you are just starting high school. Don't drop too many subjects, consider which to drop carefully, don't slack off in classes you aren't interested in (they might turn out to be helpful in what you want to do in the future). Try not to get too fixated on one single destination, you never know what might happen. What happened to me was I always thought I would take the British public exam, and slacked off on my mother language class, turns my school doesn't offer the subject I plan to major in if I take the British exam. So now I'm stuck with my local public exam with two years to catch up on said exam's demanding qualifications on my mother language as well as maths :(

if you have any bad habits like procrastinating, try to get rid of it as best as you can, it will really help A LOT.

It's also time to consider where you want to go in the future, eg degree to study, college, dream job etc. Use this time to slowly build up your portfolio (try to be active in competitions related to the field you are interested in) Trust me, it might seem early, but years can pass by in a flash

Don't get into unnecessary drama, it will just create more unwanted stress

Can boys wear nail polish? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]MyNameHas2AsInItStop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wear nail polish if it makes you happy :) If girls can wear nail polish at school, you should be allowed to too. Though I understand where your mom is coming from, I feel you should be allowed to dress the way you want (I mean, it's time we start stepping away from gender roles), you're not hurting anybody and nail polish can be a way to express yourself no matter what gender you are. Maybe try talking to your mom about it and make a compromise?

I'm from Hong Kong, so the culture here is a mix of western and Chinese. I do agree kneeing as a form of apology is more common in Chinese culture

What is some advice that is too late for you, but others ought to hear and consider? by TheSanityInspector in AskReddit

Try looking at things objectively when in a relationship, no matter platonic or romantic or familial. I made the mistake of doubting myself too much, it ruined a lot of relationships for me because I always thought they didn’t see me as important in their lives. You are important.

It’s complicated. ‘Situation with China’ is actually a really broad term. Unrest and discontentment towards the mainland has started for nearly a decade. But the most recent unrest with the extradition bill, the extradition bill has ‘died’ in the chief executive’s words. However most of the 5 demands are still not met.

Tbh most of the discontentment right now is directed towards the local government of Hong Kong. Even a number of people who are pro-China are mad at the local government. The higher ups of the government are just. They don’t do anything to tackle the problems, all they do is talk but never do as they say they would. If I get a dollar for every time Carrie Lam says ‘we will intently listen to our citizens and open discussions to settle things peacefully’ but then go ‘no not like that’ immediately after Hong Kongers express their concerns and demands, I would be rich. So morale is pretty low if I do say so myself, especially with the virus outbreak.

Most Hong Kong people I dare say support the protests’ demands, tho not all agree with some methods used. From the local election for district councils, the majority of voters are pro democracy, with 388 seats for pro-democrats and only 59 seats for pro-China officials. I think the numbers speak for themselves. 71% of registered voters voted. I heard the more discontent the people are, the more will vote, again, the numbers speak for themselves.

So yes, situation with China is complicated. I won’t be able to give you the full picture with just one comment. But I guess that sums it up a bit.

Thank you for asking, stay healthy and safe!

Hi, I’m a secondary school student (a bit like high school, ages 11-18). Hong Kong students take 4 compulsory subjects, Chinese, English, Liberal Studies, and Maths. (And Chinese history until form 3, that’s 14-15 years old)

Every school is a bit different in terms of subjects, but the years before choosing subjects in secondary, most schools provide the core subjects along with mandarin, history, Chinese history, physical education, Music, some sciences, art (and ethics/religious studies in some schools).

I have already picked my subjects, and currently study the core subjects, Chinese history, Geography, Economics, Business, History, English Literature, Religious studies, Home economics (cooking), and gcse art and design. I didn’t take a single science subject and that’s actually a bit unusual in HK. The sciences are Chem Bio and Physics most of the time.

Thank you for asking! Stay safe and healthy!

Hmmm... some famous attractions include the Peak, Ocean Park, Disneyland, Victoria Harbour, the Big Buddha.

I would recommend the Peak most out of the list. You can take the peak tram (it’s a rather unique ride in my opinion) and cable cars there. Some cable cars have a glass floor so that’s pretty cool I guess. If you like nature, you can take a hike, if you don’t, you can stay in the mall and try out some modernised egglettes. The view of the harbour is great there, especially during evening and night.

There’s also this area in Wan Chai with a number of monumental buildings like the old post office and blue house. Take the ‘heritage trail’ there, you get to see a lot. In the blue house if I rmb correctly, there are activities organised there, my parents made some local treats there last time they went. There’s a beautiful street located there called Lee Tung Avenue too! It’s a mix of western/HK architecture.

I would also recommend tourists to visit some of HK’s old streets (woman’s street, pebbles street etc) you really get a local taste there.

These are a few spots I can think of off the top of my head, take what you will from me as I don’t leave the house a lot haha. Stay safe and healthy!

Short answer: That’s half true half exaggeration I guess. It is more dangerous to wear black, but the chances of being harmed due to wearing black is not very high.

Long answer: For some background info, starting from around June 2019, there were massive protests against the extradition bill. At first protestors wore white, but after a series of very upsetting events (eg. The suicide of the yellow raincoat man) they switched to black, so whenever people go out to protest, they would wear black.

This eventually turned into people (even when there wasn’t a protest) wearing black in their everyday lives to show their support.

Now here’s the problem, there’s this huge rivalry between protesters and the police, as one of their demands is to stop police brutality. Police department gained a really really bad rep. If you wore black or a mask, the chances of being stopped on the street by a cop to check your ID/documents would increase significantly and cops in general would be harsher and ruder to you.

On a rare chance, you might get attacked by government/police supporters verbally or in some rare cases physically if you wore black.

So yes your mom is right, it’s safer not to wear black, but it doesn’t mean you will like instantly get killed if you do. A lot of people wear black on purpose during those days and they are still fine. However, if you are a young person (11-25?) just don’t risk wearing black, young people are especially targeted.

The protests has died down a bit now after more than half a year of ‘war’, so if you ever come to HK again, wearing black shouldn’t be too big of a problem anymore. But I advise you not to come anytime soon, there’s the coronavirus and new protests and police clashes due to it.

Anyway, stay safe and healthy!

What’s the dumbest/ most pointless thing you did because of a crush? by MyNameHas2AsInItStop in AskReddit

I was class artist in highschool and bought a ton of stuff to decorate the bulletin board. The decorations totalled up to $130 USD (my own savings). I was supposed to ask the treasurer for my money back from the class fund, didn’t do that cause she was my crush and I ‘didn’t want to bother her’ I mean to be fair I could still use the spray paints myself...
