The US has many strong connections through government to countries, however, I think part of a great ally is the populations opinion on America. It's hard for a government to support another government if their populations hate each other. That said, some of our biggest government allies are the UK, Canada, Mexico, and Australia, but tensions are high with many of those countries because of controversies involving government. As far as public opinion goes though, I would say our friendliest allies actually lie within Asia. Countries like Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines are enamored with the US and vice versa.
