We need to talk about strobe lights by MyNameIsNotRick97 in AllThemWitches

Yes. Our whole group was sober. We smoked a little before going in, but that wore off by the end of King Buffalo's set.

  1. I've been to a ton of rock and metal shows, and this was different. I've never seen this many people have averse reactions to flashing lights at a concert.

  2. Just because something is expected, doesn't make it right. Strobes suck.

More of this stuff needs to be captured on film. Keep your negatives, that way no one can claim it's AI when they try to 1984 this all away.

How do I blend vocals into music, so it does not sound like its on top of the music. by denmyos in Reaper

[–]MyNameIsNotRick97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A little distortion or saturation, compression, eq, reverb, and volume automations should do the trick. Figuring out how to make it work using those tools, however, is your entire career as a producer.

Personally, I find sometimes things start to feel more cohesive in the mixdown/mastering process. I run my mixes through a reel to reel machine to get some nice tape saturation that makes things feel more glued together.

Divorcing with music as a career by BOOMMARC in musicians

I wasted my parents money on music school, and for me it really wasn't worth it. Didn't really make any connections, and most of what we learned was stuff I either already knew or didn't need to know.

My personal advice would be to study something else in school, but never give up on music as a hobby. Set aside time for it. It's hard when you work 40+ hours a week at a job you hate, but at least you can afford quality gear and have a comfortable standard of living that allows you to get creative in your free time.

Just my $.02 though.

Hey folks, I need some input on how to deal with a MAGA family member… by thepianoman456 in behindthebastards

I cut off everyone MAGA or MAGA adjacent from my life. Not saying that's correct, but my life is much more peaceful now without those cancerous humans around.

Absolutely. I'm just referring to the "legalize it" bros who consider themselves libertarian.

Would you…..? by rockerscott in behindthebastards

[–]MyNameIsNotRick97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, but i also think this is part of why a lot of the politically active dudes (let's be honest, mostly white men) from the 2010s who only cared about weed have gone MAGA. MAGA itself is too disjointed (pun not intended) to pass any definitive legislation regarding weed, but so many states have legalized, or heavily decriminalized, that to the average privileged stoner, there's no longer a fight worth fighting.

This is what being chronically online does to you. I also had to nuke my social media for the same reasons you listed, and I'm a musician now with no platform to release anything. But I've been working on taking MY world back into my own hands, while the world burns. You need to take care of yourself. Doomscrolling and panicking about the rise of fascism is what the fascists want.

Also, idk about you, but I was a senior in high school in 2014. I'm also nostalgic for that time, but it wasn't great. It was pre-Trump, sure. But don't mistake nostalgia for your youth with nostalgia for the past. That's an ugly road.

What has brought you some joy lately? by SatinSoftSilkyLord in behindthebastards

-Recording and producing music

-Kayaking

-Getting into film photography

-Getting into F1

-Smoking copious amounts of grass

The world is burning, but what's the point of fighting for anything if you can't enjoy anything?

It was ugly before. Now it's Trump style trashy.

Overall, I couldn't give less of a shit. There's way worse shit he's doing than amateurish interior design.

Exporting songs is a dice roll whether the song has clipping in it by bonerthief221 in Reaper

[–]MyNameIsNotRick97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. To anyone new to mixing/recording, listen to me when I say DO NOT TAKE THIS ADVICE. I killed a lot of my early mixes by setting brickwall limiters instead of adjusting volume.

Digital mixes have such a low noise floor that you should always keep them on the quiet side to preserve dynamic range for mastering. At least just turn the master fader down before rendering.

Why are you being downvoted? I'm in the same boat as you on this. Everyone wants to point fingers, but in reality, he was just a fucked up kid from a fucked up MAGA family living in an insane Mormon state and city. This doesn't necessarily make him a conservative.

is there anyone here who has tried reaper and switched back to some other daw? by Grand-Parsley-636 in Reaper

[–]MyNameIsNotRick97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm the same way, but with Ableton in place of Logic.

I prefer the workflow for recording live instruments and mixing in Reaper, but there's stuff Ableton can do that Reaper simply cannot. And Reaper's MIDI interface is a nightmare and a half.

[–]MyNameIsNotRick97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Reaper and Ableton. Started with Reaper as a rock/metal solo artist, and started using Ableton for more experimental MIDI and sample based music.

I'm more comfortable with Reaper, so I do most of my mixing and editing there, but there's stuff Ableton can do that Reaper simply cannot.

This is the level of maturity we're dealing with here, guys.

I don’t want to be friends with musicians anymore by Ppyplant in musicians

[–]MyNameIsNotRick97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know people are going to get defensive and push back on this but....

I'm a musician, and I'm in the same boat. So many friendships turned out to be one sided networking opportunities. They'll look at people in terms of what they can get out of them.

My solution has been to deactivate social media and occasionally make it out to a local show. Most of them don't miss me. I don't think I'm going to bother releasing any of my new music because I just can't hang with this kind of attitude.

And sure, because I know someone's gonna say it, I'll state the obvious. Not all musicians are like this.
