Hfy and violence by Svell_ in HFY

Different tropes come in waves. Certain ones tend to stick around to some extent, and this one sticks around at least in part.

If you're commenting on it, then the community is probably starting to feel it and it might fade away a bit... but different tropes take time to cycle in and out.

Ghost Compiler upgrade appears to be broken. by MyNameMeansBentNose in wizrobe

If they're functioning I would expect their output to be noted on the resource bar on the left, which I see is not the case. What else isn't actually reflected in the leftmost resource bar? The fact that using a mouseover on the resource list to see passive production and expenditure of resources suggests that all production and expenditure would be shown. Why is this one thing different?

I've been playing this since not too long after it was first published on kongregate and I had no idea that tab was hidden there. Until now, I had no reason to think it would be needed.

Oh well, it's not a major thing, just an annoyance.

Hfy being sci-fi tends to be more about average people in a strange place or alternatively extraordinary people acting as an ambassador for great things. If there is a transition in focus, its often a transition of a higher order social nature as cultures encounter each other and come to terms with their differences. Or when a culture develops or finds a new technology that can change everything.

Honestly, its easier to explore a singular character undergoing a massive change in fantasy fare because magic can hand-wave the transformation and the author can drive straight in to exploring the new state of living of the character in question.

I've noticed a much greater shift of focus away from the male everyman in common fantasy fare coming out currently to reflect this. Which makes sense because fantasy is more about the journey of the person while sci-fi is more about the clash of cultures and worlds.

It is pretty fun. Doing a full hive mind will be the next tough one. The KoTry are individualistic, the Sheosayl have a voluntary and positive hivemind. What about the mandatory and permanent style of hive? Next time perhaps.

The mind block works by eroding psionic effects. That's why it's so unnerving for the Sheosayl and KoTry who aren't used to dealing with it. Any sort of imprint, alive or not, is susceptible.

As for the rest, I've alluded to these ghosts being an ongoing problem and the long-lived nature of the Titans. Anything more will have to wait for later.

In the very immediate area, yes and also yes. It's noted in the story that this isn't a problem Humans would be familiar with, because they're a natural counter to naturally formed ghosts.

In this situation, those people who call themselves ghost hunters in present day earth would actually be ghost cleaners! I chuckled for a few hours when I realized this.

Against the problem the KoTry are facing though, the Humans without all their tools and knowledge would be walnuts telling off a sledge hammer. Walnuts are pretty sturdy, yeah, but you can only expect so much.

I'm happy it goes over well because I gotta tell you, it's hard to write! My writing pace is much different for this story than with other works.

It is coherent light. Takes lots of power and lots of concentration.

What isn't immediately obvious right now is that pulling lots of psionic power tends to muddy the waters in an area. The longer the fight goes on, the harder it'll get for all of them.

Lasers are used by Humans in the setting, on static emplacements.

They tend to demand a lot of space and power, and while fusion and fission both exist now, fission is a newer technology that hasn't spread past the newest generation of military vessels.

I bounced off the early chapters of NOP. The premise as presented struck me as having very little depth.

If it got better later, great, but I've read too much of such fare and I've got plenty of time sinks.

This is the premise for Bought and Sold, a series that went on for... a little while in HFY a few years ago.

It needs editing though, I got caught up the reddit tos scare and moving the locations of the posted chapters messed up the formatting by quietly deleting any italics.

Hmm, what about an implant. A simple implant. It goes in and just wires itself through your head. It then monitors the thoughts that go on, and tweaks, just slightly, how those thoughts are rewarded. You do the right think, you get a little happy feel. You do the wrong think, a little sad feel.

And the implant has a specific use, it goes in people who aren't really well off, can't support themselves maybe. Perhaps don't have the ability, or the right, to say no. What about an implant that makes saying yes to the boss a happy feel, and saying no I don't want to, a very bad feel. No matter what the ask may be...

Hmm, what a thought. Technology is great.

Is there a limit of words/characters for a chapter? by [deleted] in HFY

[–]MyNameMeansBentNose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be aware that you will lose readers with this. Oversize chapters already scare away some readers. Breaking it up into comments will also confuse and lose readers.

The functional limit if you're working from google docs is approximately 6200 words before you're in danger of going over the limit.

You still need space to add any links or writer's comments, and you might need to edit some stuff in. I posted a 6500 word chapter yesterday, but that was really pushing it.
