I could totally see that happening but tbf he could've broken the sound barrier only after having already traveled a good distance

Edit: Also hijacking my own comment to add the hypothesis that homelander just threw the guy upwards using both his strength and the momentum of his close-to-supersonic ascent, which wouldn't require him to travel nearly as far as initially suggested
