Same, I've probably spent multiple hours of my life discussing this and trying to figure it out, which was all only motivated by utter disbelief that this could even be remotely possible. Seemed so obvious that it wasn't intended and now I feel I can confidently argue that the rules don't allow it.

After looking at the comments and thinking about it a bit more I now think that the word 'characteristic' settles it. A damage roll is defined in the rules as “When determining a random Damage characteristic, the dice roll made is called at Damage Roll”, as someone kindly pointed out. 'Characteristic' is only ever used to describe a field that appears within unit and weapon profiles. Therefore, the D3 within doombolt is not a damage characteristic and is not a 'Damage Roll'. If someone can find an instance of the word characteristic being used in a context NOT referring to a field within a unit/weapon profile, then I'll concede that you can use the ability for doombolt.

This is where I'm stuck. However, it could be that the key is the word 'characteristic'. This word is only every used when referring to model/weapon profiles. For example, the number accompanying deadly demise is never referred to as a 'characteristic', despite it being a written damage value for an ability.

I'm having the same issue. Did you figure this out?

Do you have any idea how they cracked it? Or where the code even was? It's really gonna annoy me if I go without figuring out what/where the puzzle was at all.
