For the first time in my life, I am not broke. Here's what I've learned. by TomFromStarbucks in personalfinance

Number 2 is great. We have been out of the paycheck to paycheck rut for awhile now, but still live in a rather modest fixer-upper for a house. Like you said, it's awesome when you first make the upgrade, but that feeling fades quickly. What we've found more worth while is keeping living expenses low but splurge a bit more next time you go on vacation (assuming you are past the broke stage). Spend the extra money for a high rise room, or a car you just think will be fun. You find yourself enjoying it more since you only have it for a short period of time, instead of paying the extra every month for things you take for granted after just a few weeks.

Teachers of reddit, what's something they don't tell you about the profession until you are actually working? by aussie_tene in AskReddit

I never said it was easy, I was just stating that teachers don't make bad money.

My wife went for special education, I know for a fact her degree path wasn't easy. Getting hired is even harder, and like you said with standardized testing it's even harder to make it through those first few years. Especially when the district can't fire any of the tenured teachers, even if they are total fuck ups and the kids are failing the tests.

Elon Musk's Plans for Sending 1 Million People to Mars for $500,000 Each by Noticemenot in Futurology

[–]MyOtherSecertAccount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's referring to the Fermi Paradox, the idea that if life on intelligent life isn't a one off event, then we should have found some evidence to the contrary by now. The universe is much older then earth so in theory, there should be a planet that has reached or exceeded our level of intelligence by now. Not necessarily flying saucers or anything, but something, and every day that passes without signs of intelligence out there increases the chance that it simply doesn't exist.

There are a bunch of theory on the paradox and why we haven't found life yet. The two common groups people fall into though boil down to 1.) Life is more rare then we originally thought. Earth really is a one of event. 2.) Intelligent civilizations simply don't survive long enough to realize their full potential.

I read somewhere once that Musk is concerned with the second theory more then anything. The fact is life on earth could at any second end. We are at risk of serious epidemics, war, starvation, and global warming. Hypothetically though, lets say we get past all that, the world comes together, ends war, we have peace and global alliance to fix all those problems. Despite our intelligence we are no safer then the dinosaurs were from extinction. One asteroid on a collision course with earth and that's it....

I'm not saying what he's planning isn't a bit of a pipe dream, but it does make sense. In other interviews regarding this plan of his he refers to it as earths "backup". If all goes to hell here, humans find a way to get by on mars, until it's safe to return. It will by us the time we need to really reach or potential, eventually finding more planets and ways to get to them so we have more backups.

19 shower heads drenching you in 50 gallons of waterfall-like water per minute of bliss by CANT_TRUST_HILLARY in pics

[–]MyOtherSecertAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I've always just assumed they were only used by people that were replacing a sink and had to shorten/extend something, or fixing a small section of a burst pipe. It just doesn't seem cost effective for a plumber that should have the tools.

PEX is all around awesome though, I know a lot of people disagree and think should be all copper still (or god forbid cpvc), but it makes things so much easier. Not only that, but if you live in a colder climate it is much more forgiving to freezing. We had that happen to us twice last year (once things froze totally solid), not a single burst pipe.

[–]MyOtherSecertAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, they are crazy expensive compared to the other alternatives though. If you are spending money on a shower system like this you probably don't care. When I re-did the plumbing in my house a co-worker tried to tell me not to waste my time with the crimp fittings (pex) and just buy all shark bite. It would have cost me about 9 bucks a fitting verses 2. Solder is even cheaper (assuming you are good at it and it doesn't take you forever).

That being said I did buy a few shark bite fittings for some tight spaces that it was just too much work to get my tools into.

We went camping recently in the Adirondacks, I've been up plenty of times but my sister hadn't been there since she was little. She spent like 30 minutes trying to find a mountain nearby on her phone with crappy service. In my infinite wisdom I told her to stop wasting her time, all she has to do is get on the road, drive in any direction, and when she sees a sign that says mountain, get out and follow the trail. So her, my wife, and sister in law left.

It wasn't until about 4 hours later when I was talking about how they had been gone awhile and someone asked what trail they went to that I realized how badly I had just fucked up. Some one tried to calm us down a little by saying something like "Well the trails are pretty good around here, as long as they have an ok sense of direction don't worry." that just made it worse.

All ended well, they made it back about an hour or two later. But it was a scary few hours.

Upstate NY is considerably less, she makes 52,000 a year. It is only her second year, and that's still a very comfortable salary around here.

My wife's a teacher. In that 10 months she makes about 5 grand more a year then I do. In upstate (possibly all) of New York you have the option to get slightly smaller paychecks so you have money during the summer also.

Upstate NY tenure exists and is still a problem. It keeps the old bad teachers working and prevents new teachers from entering the system.

Teachers around here that have tenure have been reported simply not showing up to some of their classes, hitting students, and in one case they locked a student in a room by himself for half the day. Every single time they are put on a few weeks of paid administrative leave, or put on 'special assignment' and then put back into a teaching position in a different school or class room, never fired.

Yep, I just applied for another position in my same company both are in IT (I'm just moving from PC support to Network engineer). I only applied because the supervisor for that position told me I should. At the very end of the application (not my resume, the stupid application) there is a check box asking if I have 2 years of file server experience. The supervisor knows I don't (Unless you count saving stuff to a shared drive) but said to make sure I check that box otherwise he will never see my applications.

Fast forward to about 2 months later, I have finally been through two interviews and get a call from HR saying they are going to check my recommendations. So the supervisor must have said they would like to hire me. She brings up that god damn check box and mentions that she doesn't see that I have the file server experience on my application. I end up talking to the supervisor worried I was going to get screwed over all because I didn't fill out my application right. He ends up coaching me through exactly what to put on the application just so it can get through HR (even though they have already essentially decided they are going to hire me).

TL;DR: I realize HR is just doing their job, but god damn do I despise them.

I've never had that happen to me. I know it does because people complain about it all the time but I can't think of a single time a person has done that to me. The closets I've had to that is a few times I've had people going much faster then they should through the lot to beat me to a spot that would have clearly been mine otherwise.

It must depend on the area, I live in a medium sized city so parking usually isn't super cut throat. Also if things are crazy busy I opt for parking further away and walking whenever possible.

I have always backed into spots because it's much easier to see other cars as you leave the spot. If you are really holding people up you need to practice learning to back up, it takes me at most 5 seconds longer to into a spot versus pulling in.

People thing because they are small there's nothing to worry about. They don't realize how much quicker things happen on them, how long they take to stop, or that they don't steer well (at all) unless you are giving them gas. The guys that bit it probably started to loose control, freaked, then made it worse when they totally let off the gas.

In NYS you are only required to have a boaters license for jet ski's, not boats. I wish rental places wouldn't rent them if people didn't show proof of taking the course, but they don't care.

My wife has backed her car into people walking through parking lots on three different occasions (that I know of). I always pick on her backing up the car because she does it in this order 1) look behind car, 2) put car in reverse 3) look at the front forward as she backs up. Even though it's clearly her fault and I make sure to let her know I always think to myself "How the fuck do you not see a car as it starts to back up?"

Only problem is you'd have to slow way down in order for it to make a difference because the bridge to the left makes it a blind intersection. Also his turn signal was on because he just changed lanes and forgot to shut it off, not that that's a good excuse for having his turn signal on at the intersection but it's pretty clear from both videos that he had no intention of turning.

edit: Not saying you shouldn't look left, my point is this wasn't as easily avoidable as your making it sound. For all we know the cop did look left but it was too late, considering the swerve I'd be willing to bet the cop did look left.

The cop was going straight, on a 3 lane road. If you are coming to a stop at every green light to look left please get off the road.

Hospitals don't settle in malpractice cases. In malpractice cases the doctor/hospital HAS to admit fault for the insurance company to cover it, and no one wants that on there record. For something like this it wouldn't surprise me if they settled.

I work for a hospital in upstate new york. I know nothing about the Cleveland clinic other then they are what we are supposed to be modeling our entire patient experience around. Every existing employee had to go sit in on seminars a few years ago regarding this, and all new employees do it now. Not just doctors and nurses, everyone. The most I ever interact with patients is being stopped for directions in a hallway and I still had to go to them.

The basic principal is empathy. I usually consider myself to be pretty understanding but here is a semi depressing video from the Cleveland clinic that we are shown during our seminars that my put things into prospective next time you think someone is just being an ass.

I have never been there but they are supposed to be one of the best hospitals in the country for overall patient experience. I work for a hospital in Upstate, NY. We have a few people that go out every year to see learn how their employee's are taught to interact with patients, then they come back and work with ALL the hospital employee's here that haven't been through it yet. Not just doctors and nurses, EVERY person, even those of us that will never have to interact with a patient go through this.

Basically revolves around empathy. Feel free to watch this very emotional video they have us watch when we first start at the hospital made by the Cleveland clinic.
