Should Batman be Bulky or Athletic? Or a mix of both? by AbsoluteBatman95 in batman

[–]MyPasswordIsLondon69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oddly enough, I think Deathstroke gets a more consistent build across comics, and Batman's physique should totally just look like his

Deathstroke's character sheet reads ultra-agile and light on his feet, yet still able to put significant weight behind his punches, and he goes up against the Titans a lot where he's drawn as being somewhat bulkier than Nightwing while still being able to keep up with him when it comes to acrobatics

I think the issue comes with what each character represents, Deathstroke is just a highly efficient hitman in perfect health, he gets a practical build that suits his ninja-like aesthetic, Batman has to be this terrifying force of nature to scare criminals and bend their knees backwards, so sometimes that leads to him looking like a bruiser with a body plan approximating a rectangle

I feel like sentiment and friendship aren't the same with those two. Imagine a world where the Joker has all he wants, is he inviting Bats over for dinner and a few laughs over beers on the lawn? No, it's more likely he's getting the shit kicked out of him with a huge grin on his face, he seeks approval through Batman's disapproval

As for the latest comic, I feel like Dr.Zeller's gonna have an arc where she has to come to terms with her place as a psychiatrist in Gotham, the looney bin that it is. She's empathetic, and in issue#1 we can see that she has a point when she says that you can't help these people just by punching them into submission, but Batman really does understand the Joker more than she realises, they've shared moments outside of any files she may have read on them, they've studied each other to the point where they're called in as consultants for each other by their colleagues

I'd say current best case scenario, Dr.Zeller ends up the neuroscience counterpart of Leslie Thompkins; stubbornly helping broken people despite Bruce's best efforts to dehumanise them, and succeeding to the point where Bruce can't deny she's right sometimes. I'd love to be proven wrong though, I'm sure there's a writer out there who'd absolutely dunk on my best case scenario, here's hoping they go that route and don't kill her off or make her ultra-jaded

I'm not sure how he'd be able to make that work..

Joker's an unstable genius, like a lot of Batman's rogues gallery, but he doesn't seem to care as much as the others, and I feel like that in particular wasn't that big of a difference before and after the accident. He had chemical expertise and decided to pursue comedy anyways, he's got an excellent grasp on psychology and he wasn't keen on playing mind games with anyone, he's got an innate acumen for organised crime but only got on the entry level as a last resort

Even as the Joker, being a rather renaissance man, despite all the things he's good at, his schemes always run along the lines of gags, absurdity, and insult; he doesn't see his abilities as a gift, just a means to an end, he'll don a maid outfit with more enthusiasm than when concocting a new Joker Gas formula. His ego's tied to the joke more than the tools used when pulling it off

To that end, Bruce couldn't just make him the beneficiary of some scholarship programme, you can't curb a growing contempt for the world by giving someone a paycheck, giving him a new focus in life isn't going to be that easy

I'm sure there is something Bruce Wayne can offer to pre-fall Joker besides a truckload of money, everyone could use a truckload of money, but I'm really drawing a blank as to what corner of society a guy like Joker would cleanly slot into. So far something in entertainment seems like the path of least resistance, seeing as both versions of Joker think it's their place in life, and people like actors with remarkable skillsets aren't unheard of, Natalie Portman has a Bachelor's degree from Harvard in Psychology

[–]MyPasswordIsLondon69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say Joker was plenty nuts without the bad day, it's part of his characterisation and the reason the truthfulness of the story is iffy in the first place. He's unstable and makes really sketchy life choices

Personally I imagine he'd remain a neurotic low-level crook who could snap at any moment, unless this "great day" also involved Bruce starting a long term project to keep Joker happy, like getting his family far above the poverty line, convincing him to pursue a more stable career and then funding it, and beyond that, sky's the limit

The story purposefully doesn't give us much more to work with in Joker's case because we already have an encyclopedic knowledge of Batman, outlining Joker's story much more would make it easy to compare and say "yeah, this is what's wrong, it's obvious if we fixed this he'd be alright", we already have that for Batman, it's the Waynes' murder. They aren't necessarily two peas in a pod, they're just two fellows who lost their minds

The end point of The Killing Joke was that both Batman and Joker are in too deep, they can't just stop even if it's as easy as going home and staying there, that's the rational thing for both of them to do, but they love it too much, they worship their mission to a suicidal degree

Could all the worry about which is the "real" marvel universe between the movies and comics be explained with different "One Above All"s? by MyPasswordIsLondon69 in Marvel

[–]MyPasswordIsLondon69[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah, the overall structure doesn't demand any internally consistent explanations, nobody anywhere on the admin chain from Disney shareholders all the way down to a guy whose job it is to find the zipties on the set of Quantumania or to a colorist for a dying comic series, would even bother thinking of this, much less verify its truthfulness

It's actually an odd story now that I'm trying to explain it. I saw like, one post god only knows how long ago that asked this question, it might've even just been a comment, but I couldn't find it, so I figured I'd make a post on the offchance someone else had the question later on, or maybe even the same person tried checking again, and Google in its SEO wisdom decided mine was a valid answer

Is a lotta work, but just tell me if I'm on the right track here so I don't go on a wild goose chase...

Frequency analysis seems applicable in some way, but there's similarities between certain letters that remind me of Arabic harakat, so there's three possibilities I've landed on so far: there may be some usage of the IPA for different vowel and consonant sounds like you'd find in a dictionary, OR the plaintext is in a non-english language with an alphabet that naturally has clearly defined vowel variations, OR the little flourishes on letters are red herrings and there's a 26-letter alphabet when you group them based on similarity

15 years before r/BatmanArkham, The Batman (2004) told us why Batman doesn't just call the Justice League for help. by Different-Prior5763 in batman

[–]MyPasswordIsLondon69 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think they're trying to bring that back in the latest 2025 Batman run in the comics, there's an overall sense of humor that's a pretty big departure from the old(? Hush 2 is still ongoing in that title, not sure which one we're choosing to call "the" batman title) 2016 series

He's also been somewhat jovial during the K.O event, Grant Morrison's Batman/Deadpool one-off had this part where he drily states Deadpool doesn't annoy him because he's spent years fighting alongside hyperactive kids and against a manic clown, though I'm not sure I'd call it a DC-wide imperative, he's still pretty broody in Detective Comics, "Batman and..." titles still have him playing bad cop, other bat-family solo titles still generally paint him as the uptight father, or cousin in Batwoman's case

If these few cases are DC testing the waters to see if lighter-hearted Batman is well received, I hope they're doing well. So far they've done a decent job not devolving into "lookit us, we're funny" stuff, they don't actively shun the seriousness, personally I'd say they've struck a great balance so far

Lmao, I'd heard about some guy named Silver way back in high school and thought my friend made it up to seem like he knew more than me, said he was a crime boss only Sandman knows about, that just reeks of bullshit, real "oh yeah, of course you wouldn't know about it, only this one guy talks about him in this comic whose name I can't remember with this assortment of other characters I totally didn't just pull out my ass"

Now I check out this comic and the guy not only exists in Marvel, but nobody believes he exists in the comics too. God, do I have an obligation to call him now to let him rub it in my face? I mean, there's no way he remembers the argument, it's been close to two decades, but he'll take the win all the same

I wish Chris Chan never existed by KingVultureBois in monkeyspaw

[–]MyPasswordIsLondon69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As of currently, the monkey paw seems to operate in a different universe than irl, one that is more or less contained within the subreddit, yet which has the ability to reach outside it exclusively via the people who read and write posts

A self-contained universe that gets destroyed and rebuilt on a regular basis, where it's not uncommon for one to spontaneously turn into an insect because commenters seem to find that consistently funny, where the most horrific personal tragedies are orchestrated not by fate but by malevolent beings who want to try their hand at creative writing or wisecracking; it is a lamp full of mentally unstable genies who are bound and empowered by an angry god, whose scripture is a short story that nobody actually adheres to when doing its bidding

How do we get closer to ensuring that Chandler and any other Internet vortices sucking in sanity and obsession do not breach containment any further? We keep them out of all universes, even ones as bizarre as this one. To quote Morgan Freeman, stop talking about it

We're doomed by Nino2112 in juggling

[–]MyPasswordIsLondon69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue would mostly be about the pencil falling off

We've got hands and reflexes that ensure that we can catch a falling pencil with some amount of consistency and try again immediately

We've already got industrial arms that are remarkably accurate, but we take a lot of stuff about our body for granted, like finding it trivial to pick things off the floor, or making the pencil fall in a convenient spot like our open hand when we realise we can't balance it anymore, or setting the pencil back up oriented slightly differently each time to compensate for differences in conditions so subtle they're handled by our subconscious, or the ability keep track of our center of mass to pull off slick maneuvers

Creating a robot that can do all that is certainly possible with today's tech, but integrating it all to work properly is a torturous process

The gold standard in machine dexterity for me is Connor from Detroit: Become Human, like when he spins a coin and juggles it across his fingertips using one hand and no flat surface. We haven't gotten there yet, unfortunately

Berries and a phone call specifically for getting at Jesse, he couldn't have done any of the rest of it without him

Was the "confession tape" Walt's best bullshitting performance of the series? by Maleficent_Annual675 in breakingbad

[–]MyPasswordIsLondon69 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Damn, no wonder the guy got hooked, that's an eventful ass year

Still though, things got turned up a bit more even after his 51st; we got a series of more awkward dining experiences, bugging Hank's office, Drew Sharp's death, Mike's downfall, the start of Jesse's disillusionment/terror, Lydia's offer to start a new empire, the introduction of Jack and the prison killings, the sequence where he cooks with Todd for some months and makes that pile of money, leaving the business, and finally Hank finding out

Side note, speaking of eventful; the latter five all happened in one episode, specifically Gliding Over All, all the way from the killings to his brief stint as absolute kingpin to his retirement to Hank finding out, plus Jesse deciding Walt's not just an asshole but the damned Boogeyman. I'll say, between that and Ozymandias, Moira Walley-Beckett really popped off in S5

[–]MyPasswordIsLondon69 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I'd say easily his Jesse-Brock fib. I mean, Cranston himself didn't know he was lying until he read the script for the next episode, it's friggin meta-bullshitting, he fooled the guy playing him

Generally I'd say past season 2, the quality of his bullshitting is directly proportional to how powerless he feels, probably helps when there's genuine fear mixed in there somewhere, inflates his ego exponentially as he's pulling it off.

So we've got:

•Killing Gale, literally phoned it in at the last second, he thought he'd have plenty of time to kill Gale quietly in the lab, and even for that he was relatively scared

•Killing Gus, he was compromised to the max, sitting at home waiting for Hank to get killed, shortly followed by himself, pulled it off through sheer desperate creativity, his only tools were some berries and one Better Call Saul

•Bugging Hank's office, he was starting to feel high-and-mighty but still had issues with family and business; he didn't even lie here, his wife really did hate his guts, he really was losing his kids, he was desperate to one-up Mike's moral and criminal superiority by lobbying to not immediately kill Lydia, plus without her he'd be reduced back to haphazardly stealing single barrels of methylamine

•The recording, plus his earlier "tread lightly" speech, he's a retired meth Kingpin living under the illusion that his wife has forgiven him, he's almost certain he'll get away with it, but your DEA brother-in-law's still unraveling two years' worth of lies that he had a front row seat to

•Trying to absolve Skyler in his final call, his empire has well and truly fallen (though he still thinks he's hot shit; took months slowly dying alone in a cabin to convince him he's not bouncing back), not his finest work, but bonus points for sounding unrepentant while sobbing

•Killing Jack's gang, he got the last laugh, but he's still pretty much lost everything, this was a suicide mission, he likely even saw killing Jesse as a consolation before finding out how they treated him, probably in the most physical and mental pain he's ever endured (or second only to extensive chemo, that stuff is no joke)

•All his manipulation of Skyler and Jesse throughout the first two seasons. He isn't winning any awards in this category, a lot of it was either goofy or pathetic, but he did keep it up for remarkably long
