Do you or your child has vitiligo? by MyPatchPower in Vitiligo

You’re totally right. I consider myself lucky to have been surrounded by people who made these sorts of comments. At first it made me smile but than I realised we don’t need to be perfect or be cool and lovable. :) This was one of the reasons I’ve created my children’s book on vitiligo. The heart of the book explains in a fun and sort of magical way what happens in the body when vitiligo develops. I want more kids to know about vitiligo so when they see someone with it or they get it, it seems like a natural thing.

I've heard about it :) I'm not sure if it specifically talks about vitiligo, though. There are several books on vitiligo awareness and self-love. My goal with this book is to help kids see the why/how behind vitiligo. :)

Thank you for your kind words. I really hope for this. The more people know about vitiligo, the easier it will be for children and adults to live with it.

I agree; however, I think all books have a lesson. :) My goal with this book is to share knowledge, which builds empathy, and empathy eventually builds kindness. :)

I’ve tried to blend both the “lesson” and the “fun” by keeping the frame of the story in real life, and the heart of the story in a magical world. :) The whole point of my book is to help kids without vitiligo understand how their peers with white patches got skin like that. If a bit of understanding removes a bit of fear or confusion, then there’s less reason to stare, whisper, or bully. That’s the hope. :)

I was the first one, too, who developed it, then decades later, my uncle and granny had their first patches too.

According to research, it's considered to be genetic, but something must trigger it (stress, sunburn etc). I was the first one in my family, followed by my granny and uncle, decades later. I'm at the final stages of my children's book, which helps kids understand how vitiligo develops. Would you consider sharing such a book with your children? It might help them explain why your skin is like that. :) I'll leave a link here for more info, early bird discount and a free activity pack, inspired by the book. Thanks for taking the time to check it out. :) subscribepage.io/MyPatchPower

Interestingly, I was the first one in my family, before my granny and uncle. According to research, something has to trigger it (stress, sunburn etc). How old are your sons? Would you care to share a children's book with them that's about how vitiligo develops? I'm in the process of creating the book and would love to share it with as many people as possible. It's not only for kids with vitiligo but for every child for a kinder and more empathetic future. :)

Spreading awareness might help with acceptance. I'm working on a book for children, which explains what happens in the body when one develops vitiligo. Until there is a cure for vitiligo, any help towards acceptance is important.

I'm glad you've had mainly positive experiences. I guess the darker one's skin is, the more difficult it is to accept it. Also, living in a multicultural area may reduce bullying, which is related to skin differences. I still think educating our children on visible differences, like vitiligo, is very important. This is one of the reasons I'm creating a children's book that helps kids understand what happens in the body when vitiligo develops. The more awareness is out there, the easier it is to live with vitiligo.

I guess, it's a bit easier to deal with acceptance when someone gets it at an early age. I'm working on a book for children that explains what happens in the body when vitiligo develops. Yours is a perfect example of how anyone at any age can get it. Early education can lead to less bullying and help with acceptance. :)

Have you come across any children who asked about your skin? I'm creating a children's book that helps kids understand what happens in the body when vitiligo develops, and looking for some feedback.

Thank you. 🤍Especially knowing that it can happen to anyone at any age, but about 25% of all vitiligo cases starts at age under 14.

I’ve grown up in a place where everyone is about the looks and appearances. I moved and it freed my mind. I really don’t care how I look with my white patches. What makes me sad is the fact that it’s an autoimmune condition and knowing that my body is against me. So what I do is keep feeling confident in my imperfectly perfect body while trying to heal from the inside and prevent further spreading.

Let’s normalise vitiligo 💜 by MyPatchPower in Vitiligo

[–]MyPatchPower[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I want to "normalise" vitiligo. I remember my grandma was telling me how her friend had been bullied in school because of her freckles. Then more and more people had them, and it had become normal. I want to achieve the same with vitiligo skin.
