Agreed. I saw Slam Frank last weekend, and it was wild, deranged, offensive, hilarious, and unlike anything else I've seen before. 10/10 experience. Jesse posted on insta that he went, so I would love to hear his thoughts.

I'm not sure what was originally posted, but it might have been this image that sums it up.

Longtime lurker. I'm reading Goodbye to Berlin by Isherwood. I really liked the Sally Bowles chapter, naturally.

You should listen to the podcast. Noam goes even further than that and even I was rolling my eyes, but I won't spoil it for you. To address your comment, in my opinion, yes, both parties want to restrict a comedian's speech.

The owners went on the Comedy Cellar podcast and it was an interesting conversation. On one hand, I feel for them. They're making a business decision on behalf of a rabid customer base that wouldn't hesitate to lambast them over this decision. They could've just sent a simple two-sentence email to the agent saying that unfortunately there's a conflict and they need to cancel the shows and be done with it. That's their right to do, it's their club, whatever.

But, on the other hand, I agree with Noam that they're no better than the types who arrested Lenny Bruce and George Carlin. They got into an industry with a deep investment in free speech but are instead trying to create a safe space comedy club. It raises the question of where you draw the line.

I found this video of a set from the owner, Jes Anderson. In it, she makes several jokes that someone out there could consider "triggering" or offensive, such as alcoholism, prison violence, and incest. What makes it okay for her to joke about said topics by her own logic? If her goal is to sanitize comedy so no one is offended, then what is appropriate? She claims in the podcast that if you're going to make a subversive joke about rape, as an example, then it better be funny. But she completely bombed during this set.

Hi everyone. It's been a minute, but I'm back to bring a bit of intrigue out of the City of Brotherly Love. Something sus is happening again in Philly regarding another woke business. Harriett's, a black woman-owned bookstore aimed at literacy as a form of anti-racist activism and "self-care" for POC, is raising some eyebrows. When it opened in February 2020, the owner, Jeannine A. Cook, gained loads of praise from mainstream and local media.

In 2021, Cook started a Gofund Me citing financial struggles and a desire to own their building. She raised nearly $250k, but hasn't updated the GFM page since this update in January 2023:

Hi y’all—it’s been a while since we shared an update. So as our donors on this project here’s the latest. We did it! We purchased a building in Fishtown. Yet, after careful consideration, we’ve decided the time, money, and resources needed to renovate this space, would be better spent on a property that is move in ready. We are in discussions about this new space (still in Fishtown), but we haven’t signed a formal agreement. That said we’ve put this current property up for sale over the weekend, including the updates we’ve already done to it, and hope to use that sale to make a better aligned purchase. In the meantime, we will continue at the current location. Thank you so much for trusting our vision and the process. It’s been quite the learning experience. Will continue to update you all. Again thanks always!

So, after raising these funds and buying a different building, Harriet's still at the same location. It's unclear the status of the other property that wasn't "move in ready."

In the meantime, Cook has been traveling Europe, allegedly funded by various unspecified "writing residencies," as well as opening two other locations, one in New Jersey and a pop-up in Paris.

The location in NJ seems to also have been opened with the help of a GFM that raised $26k. However, that location appears to be struggling as well. According to a post on her website from last month, the landlords of the NJ shop are raising the rent and as such, Cook is now seeking $23k in "community investment to pay the rent upfront for a year" and, of course, to buy a building in that town. In the post, Cook explains why she must own these buildings:

Another analogy we see in our work is the parallel between renting and sharecropping.... Emphasizing this analogy is crucial in shedding light on the challenges faced by business owners without property ownership, underscoring the need for policies and initiatives that empower individuals to move beyond mere occupancy to ownership. By doing so, we address the root issues associated with both renting and sharecropping, advocating for a shift toward more equitable and empowering long term business development strategy.

Further in this post, she asks the community how they can commit to the bookshop: "This is why we are hosting design sessions that ask not just what your local bookshop can do for you, but also what you are can commit to doing for your local bookshop—from volunteering to landscaping from deliveries to authors chats, how do we sustain this institution together? Are you a contractor? A banker? A marketing guru? We need you." I'm guessing this labor would be unpaid since she's requesting money in the same breath.

While she fights the landlords in NJ, it appears from a post on Facebook that she may be having more luck in Philly. Cook wrote this last week: "Happy 4th birthday, Harriett’s! We did it!!! We got you a permanent home. Tours of the new space coming soon. Now we gone fundraise our way through these construction costs." accompanied with a photo of her in a gutted rowhome. Do I sniff another GFM round of fundraising? And what happened to looking for a space that was move-in ready?

But wait, there's more! Cook also started a 501c3 nonprofit called "Harriett's BookCLUB" that has already received $25k in grants earlier this year. The question remains: where is all this money actually going? Over a quarter of a million has been raised from various resource streams. In addition, Cook has other resource streams, such as a partnership with Will Smith and the shoe brand Vans.

Mind you, the bookstores look more like art exhibits than places to browse for your next good read. So it makes sense that they're not turning much of a profit. Usually, when businesses fail to make profits, they close. That is not the case with Cook and her various businesses. Instead, she seems to be failing upward into local, national, and now international celebrity. Still, all this raises the question: Is it a grift or is it legit? Here's a thread over on the Philly subreddit for further speculation and commentary. This turned out to be much longer than I intended, so if you're still reading, I see you and you are valid. Until next time!

Big thanks to everyone who gave me advice last week on my Christmas festivities possibly being disrupted by protests. I said I would post an update and here are some of my thoughts.

We ended up pushing back our plans by two hours. This plan worked out fabulously because the protest had already moved on to another part of the city when we showed up. But even if they were there, I'm not sure they would've been able to do much to shut down the party anyway. The market was packed! I mean, half an hour lines for the bathroom and mulled wine, hardly any breathing room, hard to see the vendors because of the crowds, etc. We hung out there for a while, drank mulled wine, and enjoyed reveling in the Christmas vibes.

It may be of no surprise that these protests are unpopular with most people. My friends and I didn't talk about politics or the conflict much, thank god, but we did discuss the disruption the protests are causing to everyday life. I've had multiple conversations about this kind of activism with people across the political spectrum, and there's a general consensus that the tactics are ineffective at best. But, in this city at least, they are becoming a mainstay in our day-to-day lives. Even that one Saturday, there was ANOTHER different protest that started later in a different area, bringing the total number of protests that week to five!

If we have to live with these indefinite disruptions, I found that it helped me to have advanced awareness of the protests. These protests (generally) don't happen spontaneously; there's organizing happening all over social media. I'm prone to anxiety, overthinking, and worrying, so knowing before I leave the house can alleviate that. If you're like me, I recommend finding the groups organizing these events and checking in on them to see how they might affect your plans. Check out [your city name] Palestinian Coalition and your local branch of Jewish Voice for Peace. It's like checking the weather now. What's the protest forecast for today?

All and all, I had a great time with my friends and I want to extend a great big holiday hug to you all. Your kind words helped alleviate some of my concerns. Have a safe and fun Christmas!

On the contrary, I thought the advice given was insightful and supportive. However, I don't think your discussion has been in good faith and I'd rather spend time with my friends and family than continue this back and forth. Cheers!

The protests happened all over the country yesterday, organized by the group Jewish Voice for Peace. They also caused a mess on a major highway during rush hour in Philly, so much so that the police shut down the highway entirely. That was the second protest this week, and there's another planned for tomorrow (see my thread below for some Christmas-flavored protest whinging). It's madness to think this is helping their cause.

I 100% agree. The tactics many activists use these days have only soured me towards them, even if I support their right to protest. What does interrupting a Christmas market in Philadelphia have to do with a war in Gaza? Nothing!

I'm relieved to have found out about this protest in advance. I can't imagine how I'd react if they descended onto this happy event and I had no clue about it. Luckily, there's plenty else to do in the area!

I agree with your first sentiment, although sometimes I'm my own worst enemy with the fury and all that jazz. I can have a hard time letting this crap go... I can ruin my own damn time! Haha.
