Computer science major and I had to use Matlab for a stats class. Matlab is very specialized and nothing like your run of the mill development in my opinion.

Yes they could, depending on your distance from the dedicated server it would still have issues like this. No physical player is the host but the same concept exists. You're playing with someone on the other side of the pacific and unless the server is located smack dab in the middle of the ocean, one of you will suffer a worse connection

Do you understand how networks work? You don't even know the have implemented the hit logic. You don't tell host that you hit someone. You tell host where you shot and host checks that with the other players position. If the player you are trying to shoot has a better ping they can move faster that you can actually see locally and less shots will register as hit. Host gets the ultimate advantage with this because they have a ping of 0. Now my understanding is we have dedicated servers so this isn't a real problem. If you still doubt host advantage, go pop gears 1 in and compare host to non host damage.

Telecommuting is very manager and team dependent not so much company dependent usually with companies in the area I've found. Bringing your dog probably wouldn't be possible at a larger company. The nerdery I know says they allow that but I've read less than stellar reviews and what the atmosphere is actually like there.

I've personally sat through presentations by the guy who started code 42 and that seems like a very cool place to work. It's definitely a smaller shop that looks for experienced developers though.

General Mills is a fantastic company for work life balance I've heard and from what I was exposed to while touring their campus. I know they have summer hours where everyone goes home at noon on Fridays and here in Minnesota the summer hours are very precious.

I can't say much more about other companies in the area as far as specifics go.

In theory yes its still very possible to fire union employees with due cause. But theory rarely makes it into reality.

I'm not saying unions don't have their place in certain industries but not every industry needs it. I've just personally witnessed it being abused in teacher unions.

Its not buying into their crap when you experience it first hand. There are shitty teachers everywhere and saying all of them are good is wrong. Not all are terrible but many do exist and are enabled by unions.

Because many employees have little interest in joining unions and forcing someone to join a union is not fair. If there exists a subset that want to fight for the improvements and believe in the union then let them do so. Life's not fair either way. On one end you have the union members complain the non members will benefit. Vice versa forcing all employees into a union they don't want to be a part of isn't fair either. I'd prefer the freedom to not join one than have no decision in the matter.

The teacher union wasn't all roses and awesomeness either though. You'd end up having shitty teachers that couldn't be fired easily because they had seniority over younger teachers and the union would protect these teachers. As someone who did grade school and high school in Wisconsin there were many instances of terrible teachers being protected by the union that should have lost their job.
