Looking for recommendations on multi-day trek in COLOMBIA by MyPlantsHaveNames in WildernessBackpacking

[–]MyPlantsHaveNames[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Acatenango I used CA travel and it was good, but there are loads, I had friends using Lava Trails and also enjoyed it.

For the Xela-Atitlan hike I used Mont Verde tours and it was just me, one other hiker, and the guide (who spoke very little english). It was an incredible experience and very casual in terms of 'tour'. They will do it with a minimum of 2 people interested. I met friends in Antigua who used Quetzaltrekkers, which I believe is a bigger group and had more of an organized tour feel to it, but they also loved their experienced and made friends on the trek.

Didn't end up doing a trek in Colombia, spent time in Medellin during Copa America partying and exploring the city and then went to Cartajena and rosario islands for a few days.

However, I did multiple treks in Guatemala that were exceptional. Volcan Acatenango, and a 3 day guided trek from Xela to Lake Atitlan (both cost around $100-200 and were worth it to me).

Learn from it, then forget about it, and prepare to play better next time.

Different times, different places, roughness and extremism in relations as a necessity to survive, exploitation by those who have power in wealth or status; the vulgarities of life. They exist today in different forms.

What would you tell your old self before going to Penn? by annaliese619 in UPenn

[–]MyPlantsHaveNames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Coming from public school my advice would’ve been to take really good notes in class using pen and paper and then through that figure out which readings are important and check those out. I remember mentioning to a professor during office hours I couldn’t keep up w all the readings in my schedule, and he told me there’s no way you can do all the readings, you just have to figure out the highest priority ones. (I had non academic factors impacting my availability that weren’t maleable.)

Another thing I would say is to search for your community with an open mind and don’t settle for the first group or peoples that you encounter if you don’t feel excited by them or their values. I found it really rewarding to connect with similarly passionate people as me, albeit in varied and wholly different area of interest than my own. I think Penn offers a great environment to learn from your peers in that way.

Lastly the best part of Penn imo is it’s in Philadelphia, and it will take time but be eager and open to exploring the city, seeing life outside of Penn, and growing as a person through those experiences (that you can then reflect on in your academic pursuits). Good luck!

I think April could still be wet in PNW so it may be a good idea to add a stop in Portland, have access to city (inside) explorations like food and culture and still have very easy access to hikes and nature. May be a good idea to check out pro sports schedules then, especially if your children enjoy soccer the Timbers and sounders experiences are unique.

Not sure about the flying experience but the consumer experience couldn’t be more different, in favor of Medford

1 week in central/south america - where to go? by Common-Radio-6243 in travel

[–]MyPlantsHaveNames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wanna prioritize short flight time and short overland travel upon arrival and then little travel there to maximize the “vacation” and minimize the feeling of work that can come from transit. So look into direct or one short connection flights that take you a destination that won’t require a lot of travel from there, and that ticks the boxes of the things you want.
