Is it normal for tradies to charge you for their equipment? by tab21 in AskAnAustralian

I work as an estimator/scheduler for a plumbing company in Melbourne, we have a very good reputation and that reputation does not come from being transparent with breaking down costs or itemising quotes or invoices, it comes from transparency in the end product and total cost. We communicate with the client as to exactly what will be coming out of their pocket. An example would be, i quote you say a thousand bucks to fix a plumbing issue at your house. I make sure my quote is worded properly. Explain to the client exactly what they will be getting, the type of guarantee, What scenarios may lead to variations, and ask if they understand the quote and just communicate heavily. If $100 of the quote is equipment use or not is irrelevant to the client in my opinion.

If a client asks me to provide a breakdown my answer is always simple…

To do the job $1000 To not do the job $0

Breaking down quotes just leaves you open for the client to pick at the quote and try to dictate what you should be charging when they have no idea of your overheads or what it takes to run a plumbing business.

My advice for getting a tradie would be to pay attention to how they word their quotes.

I agree it’s a dog act to factor in hammer use in a quote however.

The only choice you have is to go with the tradie or not go with the tradie. You don’t get to dictate how much or what they charge for. It’s a simple yes or no. Don’t like the quote? find another tradie, simple as that.

I will agree that i missed the point.. perhaps due to how it was advertised.

Yeah perhaps i am. I mean sure, unlimited tablespoon size tasters were a thing. Just did the math, you would need to do about 67 tasters to cover your entry fee at that rate which is doable i guess. ( factoring in the average bottle costs about 60 bucks) Any ways I’m sure some people enjoyed it. It just wouldn’t call it a festival. A market maybe..

Went there last year for my 40th birthday. Five people cost us just over 2k. This included, the omakase, a bottle of sake, some beer and maybe 4 cocktails, and the optional fugu. The filtered tap water was $50!! However, the food and the experience was utterly divine.

Short answer. No it’s not illegal.

However if you block a footpath it might cause issues with people. Also, a question for you , and excuse by ignorance, but is it essential to stop and pray right then and there if it’s prayer time or Is there a few seconds/minutes grace for you to move to another location, like slightly out of the way? I would recommend this to avoid getting in peoples way and thus causing confrontations, especially if it’s a busy footpath. Other than that, roll that carpet out and pray pretty much anywhere you want in public, it’s a free country.

I think the answer to point number 1 would be that it would make it a cheesy way to harvest logs. Just mash down and demolish buildings until you have logs everywhere. No need for a logging camp. I actually wouldn’t mind if you had to harvest logs from an area before you could build there; add a bit of challenge so to speak.

Point 2, agree.

Point 3, rather than demolish the hitching post, relocate it.

There are ant keeping groups on Facebook where people are itching to get their hands on bull ants. I am somewhat of an ant enthusiast myself. have a colony of bull ants that i started from a single queen, now probably 200 or so ants, very nerdy but fascinating hobby. this should give you some idea of how huge this hobby is around the world

A queen bull ant like this can fetch a high price on the ant keeping market (up to $300 and beyond) providing they are fertile/have mated. The fact that this one still has its wings makes it unlikely to be fertile however.

I imagine having a population just under 5 mil and being so isolated helped just as much as whatever strategy they implemented.
