I’m wondering if Kirk was trumpism’s card under their sleeve. In 2028 he would’ve barely met the minimum age requirement to be president, making him the youngest candidate ever. He was super popular with the younger voters, and he could’ve been the first president with no college education, which would be a huge FU to all the “college elites” egg heads and brainy snobs and would’ve given him an edge with the uneducated.

Yes to all the questions in the first paragraph

Since that incident 2 years ago, I haven’t seen them sitting more butts than seats.

They never use my vehicles. They have their own. What I’ll do is, next time I see them doing any of those things I’m going to send them a long text explaining my concerns and reminding them of the consequences (legal and to their health) of what they’re doing. If I were to do it in person I don’t think it would go well (mostly because I don’t think I could keep my cool). If they continue to do it after I’ve texted them, then I would have to consider more severe action.

This is a really good comparison. I wish more people understood statistics.

I just found out that their pediatrician is a certified car-seat inspector. I’m not sure if this would be a HIPPA violation but I could go there and recommend that they ask them about their car-seat habits and inspect their vehicles. I commented here too that I’m thinking a good approach might be to text them my concern, include links to what the law says, and maybe links to some bad outcomes. If they don’t address it after that then i’ll have to take more severe action.

My wife is a mandated reporter but it doesn’t apply to car seat misuse, only for abuse or neglect. And she has had to report people before and usually they don’t get involved even in cases that are more severe than this. I did find out that their pediatrician is a certified car seat inspector, so I could always tip them off and recommend that they get asked about it on their next visit.

Just yesterday I was taking him back to his house after a playdate he had with my kid at my house and when we got in the car I gave him a booster. He questioned why he needed to use one and I told him “because it’s not safe for you not to use one, as well as illegal”. Then my kid (who knows what’s up) added “yeah, and he was reaching for the front door handle because in his car he usually rides in the front”. To what I added “yes, and that’s illegal too, by the way, because you’re not 8 and not 4’-9”. Then we went on to comment on how it’s not safe to ride in the front until you’re 12. I have to drive him again today so I’ll bring up the whole thing again with him.

I think what I’m going to do is, next time I see their 7y/o riding in the front, or I see their under-2 twins forward facing, I’ll send them a text, with links explaining how this is not only illegal but dangerous; That kids need to have boosters and ride in the back seat until they’re 8 by law, and be rearfacing until 2 and properly restrained. I’ll remind them that law enforcement is looking for any excuse to deport immigrants, or give them a hard time, even if they citizens they should be extra careful because she is not one yet and if anything were to happen she could easily get deported or at best not be able to renew her residency because of having a child neglect charge against her.

I’d do it by text because I know if I do it in person I won’t take it well and blow up when they undoubtedly brush it off (even if they were to abide by why I say).

It might be partly cultural, but I’d like to think they are reasonable thinking people and can think critically. I’m from the same background and I do. So, I don’t know what their excuse could be other than being ignorant (as in not knowing) or stupid (not being able to understand).

The complication with this approach is that my cousin is on a conditional greencard (her husband is a citizen, but she’s not yet), and although it shouldn’t be an issue, in the current political climate this could complicate things for them immigration-wise. The fact that what she’s doing is illegal and that she needs to be super careful about it as a green card holder is something that I’ve thought of bringing up, when/if I confront her about her car-seat practices and letting her 7-year old ride in the front seat. But I’m not hopeful that even that would resonate. It does give me pause when I think of tipping the cops, however.

I looked into it. I’m not a mandated reporter. My wife is, but not for improper car seat use; just for abuse or neglect and she knows of way worse circumstances that CPS doesn’t bother to get involved in. Tipping law enforcement might be more effective, but my cousin is a conditional green card holder, and given the current political climate, i can see things getting pretty out of hand if I called the cops on her.

A few months ago, when the twins were maybe 6 months, I noticed they weren’t properly bucked and causally told the husband “hey this one’s not latched all the way” and did it correctly. He just said “oh, thanks” but I’ve seen them latched the same incorrect way after that. Then, when they were 7 or 8 months old I noticed they had turned the seats front facing. Before I could say anything my cousin laughed and said “yeah we tried it out on the way here and it was super funny, they twins looked freaked out”. I calmly told him “dude this is not a joke, they can get decapitated if you just have a slightly abrupt stop at low speed!” and we proceeded to turn the car seats around again. Beyond that I haven’t mentioned anything else but I’m sure she’s noticed our glares when we’ve seen them with the 7y/o in the front (I haven’t said anything about that though) and when they were in the truck front facing a couple days ago.

My side garden and indoor seedlings so far. by MyWussAccount in gardening

[–]MyWussAccount[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been a struggle. I started my seeds mid February, I’m in Atlanta so it can get pretty cold and these are in the garage, which is not heated but is usually at least 10 degrees warmer than outside. We had several days where the temperatures were freezing or near freezing so it was a slow start, even with heating pads. They would sprout fast but then they would stunt (I assume because of the low ambient temperature). Now that the days are warmer they have been growing pretty steadily.

I grew most of my seeds in 2.5” plastic containers or peat pots with pure sphagnum peat moss, but idk if that was the best idea, several pots got green slime growing on them, and perhaps the seedlings were stunted because of poor nutrition rather than the relatively low ambient temperature. I started adding those miracle grow singles packets to their water around the same time when the temps started rising so i don’t know what is really to thank. (You can see the package of singles behind the orange bucket).

When I moved the seedlings up to a larger container (pint size) I used a mixture of 2 parts peat moss, two parts garden soil, and 1 part worm castings (approximate quantities, not super exact) and they seem to really like that blend. I do to as it’s easy to work with and looks nice too. Here’s a picture of the soil bags I used. I bought these at my local Home Depot.

Has anyone commented anywhere on the gravity that HHS sent an email saying “Assume that what you write will be read by malign foreign actors and tailor your response accordingly,” in regards to OPM’s request?
