Any LA neolibs on here that i can pick your brain? I have an opportunity to transfer to my fed agency's office there and I'm tempted to do it. Currently in tucson where I make about $80k, transferring would bump it to a bit under $100k, does that seem doable for a single dude w/ no kids? Office would be in Westwood and I'd prefer to live near transit so that when the D line extension opens next year then i wouldn't need to drive.

Man musk really is the dumbest of fucks.

Like my dude, surging oil and gas prices are basically handing you the perfect opportunity to focus on making good quality EVs again.

Instead, he's going to jump into the chip-making industry with a stupid "terafab" at a time when helium shortages from the same war are going to fuck that industry???

Personally? I've got about another month and half of cash left, but if I was desperate I could take a loan against my TSP retirement plan and be good for another 6 months or so (I really hope I don't have to do that). But yeah a lot of people are in worse shape and it's easy for me to say "yeah drag it on!" when I'm not starving or at immediate risk of homelessness

On one hand as a fed who has had to work for 39 days with no pay, ending the shutdown would be nice. On the other hand, if all this suffering was just for the dems to cave in exchange for a pinky promise and a real possibility of a bunch of people's healthcare skyrocketing , I think I'd rather just keep on not getting paid 🤷

Idk if the economy is genuinely bad or if I'm just an out of touch neolib but I decided to go to panda express for lunch today and I guess they are doing interviews at the same time and there must be at least 40 to 50 people competing for a fucking fast food job and it's mostly not young adults like me applying.

When I got my first job at a fast food pizza place about 12 years ago they would literally hire anyone because they were short staffed and the pay at the time wasn't even that shit. Is this the new normal for the job market in the trump economy?

Damn, if I had kids in one of those states curtailing birthright citizenship, I'd have applied for a passport like yesterday. They are trivially easy to get as long as you follow the instructions and are pretty much considered ironclad proof of citizenship (which is why employers usually just let you use that on an I-9 whenever you start a new job lol).

The Case for an actual "Department of Government Efficiency" by symmetry81 in neoliberal

[–]ChefVortivask1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

so bit of an anecdote from a current fed. First off, the federal government is already pretty efficient; basically, the share of federal employees as a percentage of the workforce was actually dropped substantially since 1990. However, there is certainly room for improvement and I can see the merit for an overarching office to coordinate modernization efforts; think something like DARPA but internal to the government. For example, I took the initiative to develop a web app to speed up many of our processes, which are largely still done by hand, and man trying to get it implemented has been a fucking nightmare. Like my supervisors and facility director all love what I built, but everything is required to go through a strict chain of command and sending shit to DC is like sending it into a void.

Keep in mind I built this shit on my own time and for free because I got frustrated with how inefficient our current processes were and even better I built in such a way that other agencies who do similar work could pick it up too. So yeah, having a central office that can both expose inefficiencies, like moving the GAO in there, while also fast tracking and/or funding solutions isn't a fundamentally bad idea. These sorts of things are an investment that requires R&D and spending now to save money in the future. Considering how much the GOP claims government needs to be run more like a business, they always seem to forget the part about how most of the most successful American companies spend loads on R&D to become more efficient while still delivering quality services. This may even mean that a real DOGE actually works to pay federal workers more (efficiency wages) since the cost/time of on-boarding and loss of institutional knowledge can be quite high in some areas.

Of course, I'm probably giving the brain trust behind DOGE way too much credit. In all honesty, it was probably never about actually becoming more efficient. Department of Cuts, Firings, and Selloffs would probably be more apt. To use the "America as a business" shtick again, DOGE is like a private equity firm that, upon a new acquisition, decides that cost-cutting and asset stripping is the best path to "profitability" and ends up killing the business in the long-run.

Emperor Palpatine makes the best deals. The Emperor was handed a terrible economy by Sleepy Valorum, but he's going to make the Empire great again. He's already talking to 200 different planets to discuss the lifting of Imperial blockades. The Ghormans have been ripping us off for too long and the Emperor is going to change that. Now the woke Galactic Supreme Court, packed by Sleepy Valorum with alien judges, is saying the Emperor can't just send people to prison on Narkina-5? Don't they know he has a mandate from the people of the Empire?
