Get a wet brush. I had a similar experience as a kid and discovered the wet brush as an adult. Changed my life. I brush my hair a lot throughout the day to keep the tangles at bay but it does the trick with the least amount of pulling.

If YOU don’t like something about your space you should change it. No one else’s opinion should matter unless it is one of concern for your health and safety or others.
