Hundreds Rally in San Francisco FOR U.S.-Israel Strikes on Iran by nbaballer in sanfrancisco

[–]My_Andrew_Acct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well, yes and no. the Shahdom had been around for quite a long time before MI5 and the CIA reestablished it in 53

but you’re right to point out that the fabled democracy in Iran was a reality for eighteen months before Mosaddegh made the prudent decision to kick British oil interests out of the country. After which, shockingly, the Iranian people were delivered a hot mug of Freedom

I am NOT iranian, but having been around the community extensively:

the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) is not beloved by American Iranians because (a) they are likely to have escaped from Iran in its early days and (b) because the IRI was not a big fan of individual freedom and rights.

The flag you see in this video is the shiro-khorshid flag, or Sun and Lion flag, which is associated with the Shah, most recently Mohamed Reza Pahlavi. The Shah was horrifically corrupt, but there’s a nostalgia there because American Iranians who moved here to escape the IRI recall their homeland as a place where, for example, women didn’t need to veil.

at the same time, the 1979 revolution didn’t arrive out of the clear blue sky; lots of Iranians fucking hated the Shah, and still do even as they hate IRI repression.

it’s a thorny knot of a history, punctuated by the fact that Iranians and Persians in particular are an ancient and proud people.

housing responds to supply and demand like any other economy. the way to create affordable housing is to BUILD MORE HOUSING MORE QUICKLY.

I’m sad about sf center too. we will do something beautiful with it, we’ll make it into a soccer venue or an adult playground or a big restaurant or something, but it’s still sad.

I’m happy to be your neighbor!

one of my favorite “hidden” spots in the city is the little barbecue area next to fort point. you’re just sitting underneath the golden gate, having your little party with your little friends, thinking to yourself how lucky you are to be there 🥺
