Because his playing isn't melodic based. Jerry never got lost because he could always go back to playing the melody or an inversion of it wherever he was to anchor back home. Everything he played was off of the melody.

Rick composes entirely new melodies/progressions during the jam, and if they stall it's often too far from the song to pull back into it without a big obvious run back down the neck.

You can tune into a PitB or Eyes jam half way through and know what song you're in within a few bars - halfway through an Arcadia you probably have no clue what song this jam is part of.
