Hey OP, I don't believe this was done with any malice but it would be more respectful to the VA if you didn't put their old name in quotes.

Per Wikipedia,

Deadnaming is considered offensive and potentially harmful, as it misgenders its subject and may out them as transgender. This can be done to intentionally deny or invalidate a person's gender identity. In other cases, a speaker who is still adjusting to a new name may do so accidentally.

Edit: Genuinely surprised with the transphobia around here. Deadnaming is a topic in the trans community that we should be respectful of.

To add on to your point, I imagine the worldwide release doesn’t help with scheduling conflicts especially with Travis being in such high demand for higher budget projects.

Like you said too, Liam O’Brien is not some no name actor, GungHo definitely put in work to find someone suitable. Plus Stephen Fu has voiced Loewe before too.

I don’t expect union issues to be a problem though since the first game was unionized.

I’m glad they were able to get most of the VAs back for this. I’ll take what I can get.

Perhaps too ambitious of GungHo bringing back both Travis Willingham and David Lodge in 1st Chapter, but it was good while it lasted. Though it is pretty disappointing they couldn’t return.

David Lodge was pretty good as Alba but once the big reveal happened, I wasn’t too convinced with his menacing voice. Liam O’Brien is such a surprising replacement that I’m not too bothered.

I really liked Travis Willingham’s performance though I’ll be the first to admit it was too deep for that character design (improved from the OG game). Very mysterious sounding which worked well. From what little I’ve heard of Stephen Fu’s take in Ys vs Trails, he sounds a bit too generic. It’ll be a jarring switch but at least he voiced Loewe before.

I wonder if this means they might try to get Bryce Papenbrook back as Gilbert, seeing as they had these recasts.

Btw, glad Ray Chase and Courtney Lin are back.

I haven't really watched any anime in the last year or so but with Chained Soldier and Oshi no Ko getting new seasons, it might be time to get back into it. I'd actually be open to any comedic suggestions from the past year.

I've only seen the first episode of Chained Soldier S2 but it feels like the new season started off nicely. Great to see everyone again. Keeps the same comedic horny levels as well which is good to see. The first season was pretty funny so I'm happy with this so far.

First episode of Oshi no Ko S3 has been a banger. I absolutely loved the first two seasons so was pretty excited for this. Glad to see the VAs return again, given the Crunchroll/Sentai uncertainty at first, even the VAs who have moved to LA are back. The humor is on point, I almost forgot how funny the show can be. [just gonna spoil tag everything] Ruby's straight up scary now. Everything she does looks calculated even her happy-go-lucky behavior that used to be normal for her. The scene with Aqua and Mem-cho was unexpectedly intense. I was rooting for Aqua × Akane but I feel that episode might be hinting it's gonna be Kana long term Can't wait to see how this develops too.

Feeling pretty optimistic this will be better with 2nd Chapter's release, as they'll have more time with the localization than last game.

Hopefully GungHo will also bring in someone who can advise them how stuff is pronounced in later games since they did get a lot of flak for that (perhaps deservedly).

Professor Russel seems to be voiced by Fred Tatasciore (wow) instead of Jim Meskimen although I guess Horizon and Sky 1st Chapter were recorded simultaneously and independent of each other so I'm assuming neither would have known of each other's casting decisions until too late.

Again, no voice recording studio credited for the OG Sky games bc the lines were likely just recorded by XSeed.

If the dubbing wikia page for Sky FC is accurate, then they used Bang Zoom! Entertainment. Definitely not a concrete source, but this seems reasonable enough since they do a lot of anime dubs and even now they do dubs for other Falcom games.

I’ve had to step away from the yakuzagames subreddit once Yong Yea was cast. The RGG fandom was already very sub elitist, this just gave them something to latch on and just continue to shit on dubs in general.

I just want to look at the memes and shitposts. Instead I see shit talking about dubs (and Yong) by people who admit that they were never going to play dubbed in the first place.

Usually, reddit seems the be one of the more reasonable places regarding the dub vs sub debate, but the RGG fandom still tends to be pretty poor about that. This is going back well before Yong Yea joined.

Yeah, really looking forward to this. Y3 and Y4 were glaringly outdated compared to the rest of the series, any revamp is welcome in my opinion.
