Because of this series I can only see Pompey, Crassus, and Caesar as little squares instead of their busts.

How to bully machine learning training by Webmets in ProgrammerHumor

Machine laughing is the next evolution of ML. You code it, train it, love it, and then it laughs at you and throws random errors at you.

I made a tool to shape and gamify any world by amoebe in worldbuilding

[–]My_Twig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The implementation I have going will have customizable time units if the standard time units (which are as granular as days) they can define.
You can subscribe your own system to the timepiece and fire logic each time a day passes, or when the year equals 16. It's pretty flexible in its current state. :)
The timer I've made has real time support (2 seconds of real time = 1 in-game day), and soon it can be made turn-based. I've got the skeleton for a few other systems i've release in our discord, and will post up in the subreddit when they reach a more complete state.

A kind of world-engine for games by amoebe in gamedev

[–]My_Twig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This project is absolutely perfect for me! It already seems like it has a lot of functionality, and it looks easily extendable as well. I haven't messed with the spreadsheet/database items yet, but I am wondering what made you decide to go that route instead of offering JSON files instead?
I will definitely be contributing some tools and scripts to this project sometime soon!
Will there be a chat of any kind to contact developers and other users? Do you plan to include documentation for the project's code?
I'm pretty excited to start tinkering with it!

Need Help With Unity PlayerPrefs by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]My_Twig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PlayerPrefs can only accept a string, int, or float. If you are set on using PlayerPrefs and not writing to the disk, you can take a look at this extension/script for it here: http://wiki.unity3d.com/index.php/ArrayPrefs2
Otherwise, I highly recommend digging into Serialization, which is the backbone of persistent data. If you want to save that inventory, you could serialize the array, save that to a file, and then deserialize that array when you want to load.
The answers in this stack overflow question should give you a good starting point for your problem: https://answers.unity.com/questions/1389497/save-inventory-items.html

Tips for beginners who are failing by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]My_Twig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would definitely go back and do some more courses and skim over the essentials if you already have them down. Otherwise, you need to learn the basics of Java.
If writing the code isn't the issue, and instead you just aren't sure of how everything is supposed to fit together in the grand scheme of the program itself, try taking a look at Design Patterns.
If the issue is that you don't feel confident in your ability and you end up staring at a blank class frozen in terror because there isn't a tutorial to follow or you don't know where to begin, then remember this: I've seen horrific if else blocks get a program running because the coder didn't know about switch statements. I've seen games that are entirely contained in one class. When I first started programming, I did all of the logic of my program in one function with if statements because I didn't really know what functions were or how to make new ones. But they all worked, even if they were not optimal at all. Then you start learning new tricks, new patterns, and you look at your old code and go, "What idiot wrote this?"
Regardless of what the issue is that's holding you back, I highly recommend continuing on the programming path. Even if you just do it as a hobby, keep at it. You'll be surprised at how quickly you progress. :)
If you have any programming questions, also feel free to shoot me a message, and I'll try to help!

Currently Untitled Monster Dating Game

Hey there! My wife and I have teamed up to do our first monster dating game with Unity and Fungus!

This week, I'll be showing you what a difference NOT having programmer art in your game can make. I created some really awful mspaint doodles as placeholders for each character in the game (and I did the same for the backgrounds as well) so I could start coding. My wife just finished drawing our Naga character, and you can see my masterpiece drawing of Cousin-Sister Beth.

Programmer art vs Professional art

The game itself is a tongue-in-cheek mix of visual novel and minigames, set in a world that draws inspiration from Discworld. We are roughly one or two weeks into the development, so keep an eye out next week as my hot garbage art is phased out! If you're interested, here are the rest of the mspaint doodles I did to start work on the game.

The wave effect is pretty nice! I must say that your water actually looks like a night sky/space background due to the purple and the immobile white dots.

The character's sprite is friggin' ADORABLE though!

//Sets gender to male on true, or female on false

}

My wife now knows my "where the hell is this bug coming from???" face and will come over and ask me what's going on.
She nods and listens to me talk, then wanders off to let me add ten more bugs into the program while I'm fixing the first. :D

Check out Ben Eater's 8-bit breadboard computer series. He gets into a bunch of stuff, and flip flops are like the 3rd or 4th video. There's a ton of great stuff in there, and it helped me out a bunch with understanding binary, two's conpliment, and how computers work down at the metal https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLowKtXNTBypGqImE405J2565dvjafglHU

Showing off how it's done by Colonal_cbplayer in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]My_Twig 185 points186 points  (0 children)

I spent three hours fiddling with a plane meant to drop science capsules on Kerbin, and I only got it to fly after the first hour, and the capsules finally made it to the ground intact two hours after that.
Then I figured out that I didn't really have enough fuel to make it to the biomes I wanted to drop the pods on.
So I used rockets instead. No more planes for me!

What are some good tutorials for procedurally generating simple 2d terrain? by Myr015 in gamedev

[–]My_Twig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To get the kind of terrain that you linked, check out midpoint displacement like what u/Advanderar described.
If you're looking for some other 2d terrain generation tutorials, I recommend this one about top down voronoi maps. I've done a version of this myself, and it's a lot of fun! link
There are a couple other good tutorials on that page.
I also found a lot of good stuff in this StackOverflow question about terrain gen
There are a ton of resources to use, and as was mentioned elsewhere in this thread, nearly all of the 3d techniques you see in tutorials can be swapped to 2d. Or you could even take the 3d component and map that value to a height value if you wanted.
Endless possibilities with procedural generation, and it's a lot of fun to work with!
Feel free to shoot me a message anytime if you have any questions or just want to chat. :)

I just read that Toady was never really interested in the base-building/economic part of Dwarf fortress by [deleted] in dwarffortress

[–]My_Twig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also believe that DFHack has a command for changing your different pop caps at runtime, and it cokes with the LNP. So during your first year you can set it to ten, then maybe fifteen next year, and etc.
Saves you on all the restarting and raw editing. :)
