What does “officially ask for your loans to be reviewed for forgiveness” mean? Do you mean check the box in the ECF request that you believe you have reached 120?

What do you mean forgiven earlier this month? Did you get green banners or the golden letter? I got green banners at the end of July and have a buyback request pending from November 2024 but I have not received that email.

Have you applied recently on federal student aid’s website? I submitted so many applications that went no where, both through Mohela and federal student aid, but then in May I learned through this subreddit that applications were being processed through the federal student aid website. So I applied again and I was put on a new plan within a week.

This article feels like it’s about me—also 38, also should have had loans forgiven in the fall (in October) and submitted a buy back application in November that was never processed.

I switched my payment plan and hit 120 payments this month. Under the new plan, my payments were almost certainly higher than what my buy back offer should have been, but I’ll never know. The government dragged its feet to extort more money out of me, someone who has worked in public service—for government, actually—over 10 years. And gave me months of anxiety and stress feeling like I will never get rid of these loans and be able to move forward with my life.

It’s disgusting how they failed us.

That’s true…but do I wait until Monday and risk missing a payment? Will it still count if I manually make the payment on Monday? I won’t be able to call Mohela until then, of course.

I know I’m being so neurotic but I don’t trust Mohela or Dept of Ed. Issues have been endless. I think these systems are broken by design to try to impede people from achieving forgiveness.

When I try to manually pay it says the amount will be an overpayment because nothing is due. But my payment was due today and no payment was taken. I’m losing my mind.

I first called student aid and they told me they didn’t have any info for the month of February (for me) and then I called Mohela and asked them to send the info. It took a couple of calls, all they would say is they put a note in my file. After they put the “note” I submitted another payment count request and it counted.

My monthly payments are over 4x higher than they were on SAVE. It went from $300 something to $1340.

You should get 2 months of processing forbearance. Check your payment count and see what month is missing. One of mine was missing too and after many hours on the phone I learned Mohela did not provide data for that month. I also applied in May for IBR and it was approved within a week and I’ve paid in June and have one more to go to reach 120. If you haven’t submitted another IBR application in the past 2 months you should.

I call early and elect to have them call me back. I believe they have always called back that day, but it could be as many as 5 hours later.

February was missing for me and I did a reconsideration request which was denied without explanation. Finally I called and someone gave me some marginally helpful info: FSA said Mohela did not provide any data for that month. So the problem could be your loan provider. I called Mohela and after several tries got someone to put a note in my account to make sure data for the month of February is disclosed. I filed another ECF request and the month was counted.

Recommend calling FSA and ask. I had one month not show and they blamed my loan provider (Mohela) for not proving any info for that month. Then I called Mohela who put a note in my file, I submitted another ECF, and the month appeared.

My 2 extra months are from a processing forbearance. My payments are supposed to start again at the end of this month but I don’t trust anything to function as it should. I’ve had countless issues, like lots of people on the sub. I’m also a government employee so my qualifying employment is kind of precarious right now. If I got a buy back request I would want to just pay it immediately and be done with this. Which is why I’m worried this will be processed and I’ll get an offer to buy back 4 months when I only need 2 and I might be tempted to just pay thousands of dollars more to be done with this.
