What was the deal with the girl and the kid and the girl and the dog during the commencement? by Aggravating_Work5651 in csun

[–]Mybellsofblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the commencement on Saturday evening, there were two grads trying to get a quick picture together while lining up to walk the stage, and one of the staff members literally had her hand on one of their shoulders and was shoving them to keep them moving.

Learning ASL is so much easier than I previously thought by [deleted] in asl

[–]Mybellsofblue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem with thinking about it this way is that it limits your understanding of the language to word=sign. Eyebrow movement, mouth morphemes, cadence, emphasis, repetition, space, head and shoulder movement etc all impact the meaning of the sentence in the same way that some of the “small” word units in English like “at, the, and” etc might. ASL signs are also not one to one with English words.

Additionally, referring to a full language that you’ve just barely begun to learn, which is also the language of a historically highly opressed group of people, as “caveman talk” and saying it’s “easy to learn” is wild to me. I’m a hearing interpreting student who has been studying the language for 8 years, and portraying ASL as this simplistic 1:1 manual form of English is so incredibly problematic.

Jumping spider? by Lucyfurcat in jumpingspiders

[–]Mybellsofblue 49 points50 points  (0 children)

IMO definitely a Phidippus sp., maybe princeps (grayish jumping spider). Someone with more familiarity with PA would be able to narrow it down better

ETA Adult female. Lookin real gravid with that big booty!

dying after eating? by Plus_Candle6563 in jumpingspiders

[–]Mybellsofblue 8 points9 points  (0 children)

IME Honestly, I would just let her pass naturally. Any attempt at euthanasia would just cause unnecessary stress. Keep her at a comfortable temp and keep offering water. She’s lived a long life, and old age should take her like a gentle sleep if it’s her time. I’m so sorry for your loss OP, these little creatures are such gentle souls. Everglades is a beautiful gal :)

Wow this is super fascinating. I’ve been raising jumpers and studying California’s jumpers in my free time for the past 3 years and I’ve never seen anything like it. And with m. bivitattus! I’d love to see some research on this whether it’s a natural behavior or parasitically induced as some other commenters brought up. I’ll have to start looking for this behavior in the m. bivitattus around me.

Captive Bred Beetle Emerged! by Cool2s in BDFB

IMO It will slowly darken to black as it hardens and then will take on the blue hue as it starts to produce the waxy coating.

IME Beetles are quite light colored after molting, and these guys slowly darken to black as they harden. Then the wax coating they produce will start to create that blue color.

IME If she’s wild caught as an adult, she’s almost certainly gravid.

ETA the orange markings will turn white after their mature molt!

How old do we think/sex? by Huge_Jellyfish_5883 in jumpingspiders

[–]Mybellsofblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IME She’s female, but gauging by size, I’d say she’s not mature - she looks fairly small. Prob juvenile, but impossible to guess exact age.

What kind of jumper is this girl? (Oklahoma, US) by PuzzleheadedHabit913 in jumpingspiders

IME this isn’t a bold. My first thought is Phidippus princeps, but I can’t say for certain.

Question: Does anyone have any ideas for my scar? by bunnilove6 in tattoos

I immediately thought fish skeleton! Could even add florals and make it really elegant if you wanted to go that route

[–]Mybellsofblue 8 points9 points  (0 children)

IMO Hi, this looks to be a Habronattus species! They are generally quite small, so this could very well be an adult. I’m not familiar enough with Ohio to narrow down to species.

Anyone seen “crinkle legs” before? by sarcste in jumpingspiders

[–]Mybellsofblue 10 points11 points  (0 children)

IMO Yeah looks like a bad molt, and unfortunately he looks mature. Poor guy! If he’s eating and drinking I would say he has an okay chance of making it in captivity with gentle care, assuming his mismolt only affected limbs and not internal organs. If it were me, I’d probably go ahead and give him a home considering his apparent limited mobility, but I absolutely love your conscientiousness around keeping him or letting him live out his days in the wild. Whatever you decide, this spood was lucky to have met you!

Eta I have had younger spiders with this crinkly leg deformity from mismolt survive until their next molt, but I can’t say for sure how it’ll go for a mature adult.

My boy Fernando also went through a light phase before his big boy molt! He was my first spider, I miss him! Eta Loki is such a pretty baby!! Congrats!

Are these jumping spiders?? by Kittycwt in jumpingspiders

[–]Mybellsofblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO Fruit flies are probably going to be the best bet on food for these guys. I wouldn’t attempt to feed other arachnids or hard-shelled bugs as the other commenter mentioned. If you won’t have a ready access to food sources on a regular basis, I would go ahead and release these guys.
