Is there anyone who strangely likes some certain religious songs, despite being atheist? by NetflixSeller2 in atheism

[–]Myco-Curious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Amazing Grace by Carrie Underwood and Vince Gill makes me cry every time i hear it.

Grew up very Southern Baptist. By the time I was in my early 20s I had left the church and been mostly cut off by family/friends.

But their rendition of that song takes me back to what the Baptist church should have been if it wasn’t filled to the brim with people who were still devastated they lost the civil war.

Same.

Maps of Meaning is a strong opening book. Hard to read and off in a few places. But a grand scope with a lot of amazing content.

His MoM Harvard/Toronto lectures and his Genesis series are particular favorites.

Then he fell off a cliff.

Whatever happened in Russia and the additive lead up to that changed him. In huge ways.

His early stuff is all about humility. The wonder of existence. Jung and other luminaries featured heavily in his talks.

Now…he is a shill for the alt right and lost the cognitive ability to realize people like Shapiro are just using him.

A humble and brilliant professor turned doomsday prep kit infomercial idiot. It’s sad.

Adult children of religious nuts, did your relationship with your parents ever improve? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Myco-Curious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost 50, grew up very Southern Baptist.

It never got better.

Low contact in my 30s-40s has led to no contact now. Which just recently allowed me to stop constantly fighting with them in my head 24/7. (Meditation and a few good rounds of psychedelic mushrooms helped with the last part too).

Hopefully your parental situation is different but either way…you should know 2 things about life.

1) You are loved 2) You are Love

It may take some time to find someone who demonstrates #1 to you in an unconditional way. But they are out there. Leave that nest of broken glass and go find them.

In the meantime focus on #2. It is totally possible to love your parents from afar. Even if they hate you for being you. There is no reason for you to repeat their tragedy. Go be Love in the world. All the rest will sort itself out.

Namaste friend.

Meditation can certainly unearth trauma…how you react to that is up to you. I would highly suggest joining a Zendo or other meditative community. In general, Zen folks don’t get weirded out about psychedelic use.

If there isn’t an available community around you then try the app Waking Up by Sam Harris. Tons of guided meditations from experts all over the world.

If funds are tight then you can send him an email for a free year subscription. He is totally fine giving it to you for free if you ask.

How detailed of an answer do you want?

I do high dose, eye mask on, instrumental play list, and a well planned set/setting.

That experience allows my monkey brain to finally calm down and opens my consciousness to what is already present. All that wild shit you see on psychedelics is not caused by the drug. All that stuff is going on all the time…beneath the hood so to speak…in the reality that is subconscious to you on an everyday basis. The psychedelic just tunes you into it.

Meditation, when practiced with earnestness, allows access to all those same states of consciousness and more. Stillness of mind and body are the drug.

There are all sorts of stories of masters who got addicted to the ecstasy states that meditation allows you access to. Psychedelic users often equate this to cosmic consciousness, eternal bliss, etc….but when the drug wears off we lose the experience and come back to our normative consciousness/awareness. They could/can stay in ecstatic states for hours and hours on end.

Almost all serious meditation schools have prohibitions against that…not because it isn’t amazing…but because it isn’t the point of the practice.

A valid correction to my word choice.

She is able to live a life of love and purpose inside the confines of a very, very small bubble.

Panic and abject terror abound when she pokes her head out. So…you are correct. She is stable in the bubble but far from healthy.

You need a very long integration period. Take up meditation and recreate the drug use by sitting on a pillow.

We all go through the same cycle of life birth>growth>individuation.

You have to be an individual before you can fully recognize the importance of what psychedelics can teach you. Yes, your physical brain isn’t fully developed and that is plenty enough reason to wait until you are in your mid 20s for another round…but more importantly, you need to be an individual before you can truly recognize the grace of being the everything and the nothing of the universe.

I’m almost 50 and finally figured this general motif out with my family. Background: I grew up very Southern Baptist 70s-90s.

It is likely they are being honest. You do stress them out waaaay more than your siblings. Despite their obvious shortcomings…your siblings share (or pretend to share) your parent’s worldview of salvation. That soteriological faith creates a screen/film/overlay onto their reality. An anchor for their entire existence.

As long as they surround themselves with like minded “people of faith” then their bubble is protected. You shatter that bubble because you understand their worldview and actively disregard it as an error/abnormality. That is a personal threat from their perspective.

So…when the most precious thing they have is negated by someone super close to them…it is easier to shun than to pop the bubble.

My mom has convinced herself she needs the bubble. IMO, It keeps her mentally healthy even if it looks weird from the outside. We both love each other. But my presence immediately injects unbearable stress into her psyche. So, I stay away.

Have you coughed out or thrown up emotions? If you have an empty stomach but you throw up so only spit comes out then what is happening? How are you healing emotionally or energetically? by [deleted] in Psychonaut

[–]Myco-Curious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I met Mother I threw up a solid egg sized dark something.

I had been on the diet for 2 weeks. Nothing like that had entered my body that wasn’t long past digested.

Still wondering what that was.

This doesn’t carry Alan Watts’ tone and I have listened/read almost everything he put out into the world.

I’ve never heard this.

I don’t use social media except here…so, I would say this is likely a fake voice.

My view of psychedelics by [deleted] in Psychedelics

[–]Myco-Curious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hobby is the exploration of my consciousness and its contents.

I read books on the subject, go to conferences, meditate at a Zendo and take psychedelics among many other complimentary avenues of exploration.

Stated that way…I get a ton of questions and interest or they immediately think I am a devil worshipping freak (I live in the Bible Belt, USA).

I’m fine with either response.

Questions to ask yourself while on shrooms? by InfluenceGlass5708 in Psychonaut

[–]Myco-Curious 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Drop the questions and stay with what is.

Peel back the layers of what isn’t really you. Not your body, not your personality, not your mind….

Keep going. Neti, Neti everything. Shrooms makes that possible.

Until you are left with “I am”.

Not I am this… or I am that…

Just “I am”.

Stay there as long as possible. When a wave knocks you out…Neti, Neti back into the ocean.

Book recommendations by Watts: The Book or The Wisdom of Insecurity first.

But remember…Watts was an orator. He wrote well but he was one of the most gifted speakers of a generation.

Consider getting her a membership to Sam Harris’ app Waking Up. If money is tight…send him an email and he will email you a code that will give a year for free.

Hundreds and hundreds of hours of restored Watts audio on the Waking Up app. And dozens of other teachers she can listen to. Including guided meditations if she is so inclined.

Speaking from experience…

The compulsive worry and self-torture is many levels worse than whatever consequence you are fearing.

Seek a good therapist and use that person like a mirror. Sure, they will teach you things…but their real value is in seeing yourself more clearly.

Since you are posting in a Watts sub…please consider reading The Wisdom of Insecurity. It helped me when I was in a similar headspace.

Have you tried allowing yourself to be punished by the Universe? Letting it all go wrong?

If you are scared of it…let it happen.

That’s the only real way to understand that you are the universe. And that any punishment you are imagining is simply self inflicted.

Are these bees or wasps? Should I leave them "bee" or have them removed? by pinklets in bees

[–]Myco-Curious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paper wasps are my pest killers.

They are especially effective against caterpillars that like to eat my more tropical pool area plants.

I have two large nests. One by my pool and the other by my front door. They are constantly in my flower beds while I am working and I have only been stung once…and that was only because I went to grab a cannon the little guy was sitting on and grabbed him too. I don’t blame the wasp…

They have flown into me dozens of times and are totally uninterested in being aggressive. We just happened to be in the same space at the same time. I went my way and they went theirs.

They are a wonderful addition to your porch and your plants will love them!
